Look at the Audio Technica m40x. That might be a good start for you.

I recommend iTekinic BH005 which is no more than $80. I has tryied this pair of active noise cancelling headphones since last week and was impressed by it! Besides, it seems that iTeknic BH002 also works well but cheaper than BH005, which is $49.99 after you use $10 coupon.

I would also recommend the Creative Aurvana Live headphones. There was a new model released a few years ago but I used to own the older one, which was actually based on the Denon AH-D1000 (or was it AH-D1001?!). Very good sound quality for the money, I think.

I would recommend not buying headphones under 100$, unless you have a specific model model in mind for a specific purpose.
Beyerdynamic DT990pro costs just $149. It might not fit everyone's taste but is technically one of the best headphones in the world.
Why waste $100?

I recommend used. HFM 4XX and maybe Senn 598's can be had for that.

Excuse me, but the 990pro has a runaway hot treble starting at 5k, which disallows them from my list.

I do agree that much more can be had with a bit more money.
