What will the 4S do for me?

I've got an iPod, air head amp and the ER-4P's. What difference will the 4S provide? More bass? I read a post some time ago about the difference but can't find the thread. Thanks.

IMO the difference between both is basically the impedance the 4P was desinged for portable use without an amp, and the 4S needs an amp, both sound very similar, but why not getting the 4P and the cable adaptor, this way you got both worlds, and trying one and the other, will give you an idea of which is better for your case......

The 4S is smoother, with less of a spitty treble... to my ears

The impedance match is very important to get an optimum sound, out of any driver, maybe in your case the 4p will sound better or maybe the 4s, I did a search and it seems that the impedance of the earbuds that came with these iPods is around 32 ohms, so I guess that is the impedance of the iPod itself, which makes the 4P a better option, the 4S needs more power as the impedance is higher.

Sov's right about the impedence (although the impedence with the 4P's I think is even less that 32). I've had the 4P's and have the 4S's. The main difference to me if the bass. The 4P's give a more "pronounced bass" for me, while maintaining the excellent detail it provides. The 4S give me a more "refined, musical" bass and bottom end. It doesn't stick out anywhere in the presentation and complements the other sounds incredibly well. The Ipod can drive the 4S's well without an amp, but the addition of an amp will give you a fuller sound and provide a touch more depth.

Hey the adaptor works in the one way, to make the 4P like the 4S, as you already owned the 4P, it makes no sense, it only raises the impendance but not decreases the impedance, you even need to lower the impedance a little bit, lower thna 32 ohms, and not to increase it, if you are going to hook it directly to the iPod, but if you are going to use the amp, is OK. The adpator I think is only a couple of resistors inside a cable or so, just to make the impedance looks higher when using the 4P... please, correct me if I'm wrong William you owned both and the adapter IIRC, right?

Sov, He has the 4P's, he wants the 4S sound, to do that you need the cable to raise the impedence. That's the only difference between both phones anyway, the impedence.

Why would he need to decrease the impedence?

Agree, if you are gonna use the amp of course, if not you don't need it, but anyway, if I were in your shoes, I will get it, just in case....as Bill says this way you have the best of both worlds, let's see if one oth these days I grab one used just for protable use once in a while, and just in case, I think this non expensive look will keep people from assaulting me on the streets, when in the bus or so, and you can enjoy the music the very right way, these earbuds really sucks, man
