First there was analog....

....then came digital...

What's next?

What do you think will be the technology to replace digital?

Perhaps 012 (on,off,half on?).

quantium, which is of course, pretty much analog

that's still digital, just not binary.

The truth is, we don't know and really cannot tell. Digital did not really make sense until transistors and microchips became commonplace.

I think it is somewhat strange that so much is digital now, because NOTHING in the real world is digital in nature. That, combined with the copying problems digital faces, makes me think/hope that a move back to analog may be in the future.

Ebonyks: Quantum=digital. A quanta is the smallest discret unit of something. Quantum computation uses the different spins of atoms intead of the on-off state of a transistor, but the idea is the same, excet with more states. Transistor=on/off, spin=left/right/up/down (IIRC).

ORGANIC!!, duh, it was obvious just look at computer displays, first there were CRT's (analog), then LCD's (digital), and now there are going to be OLED displays (Organig Light Emitting Diodes) which kick major ass!!

Music will not be, ripped it will be GROWN!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think music will still be digital because of future storage mediums.

The sampling rates will continue to go up to improve the quality though.

I wonder how high they will get until the audiophiles can't really tell the digital from the analog?

128bit/1MHz PCM or 1bit/22.6MHz DSD or yet another digital format?

well, analog (vinyl) has built in distortion, so I would hope that it would be much better than that

Omniscience
Prescience
Telepathy

Those are just guesses, though, no-one really knows what goes on in the afterlife.

Analigital

Actually, I think it will stay digital forever. It doesn't seem possible to advance to anything further (even though that's what people thought before digital existed).

Organic materials still use digital signals.
