What's your source, and which wire are you talking about?
(Not sure what you're asking).

I don't have your gear, but I'm pretty sure you should put the volume on you computer up to full, and on your DAP I'd try 2/3 to start and experiment with going up/down from there.

There are variables that could change this, e.g., which player software you are using on your computer, soundcard firmware configuration, etc. For the portable, I don't know if it has a true line-out option or whether you have to use the headphone-out. If there is a way to get a true lineout rather than using the headphone out (whether via firmware configuration or through a compatible adapter), that's the way to go.

Hopefully, someone familiar with your particular equipment will step in. If not, start with the suggestions above and use your ears to make adjustments. Hope this helps a little.

If your running out of an "amped" line out (like an mp3 player, consumer soundcard, etc...) then put the volume on about 60%. If you are running off an unamped line out (like on the back of a pro audio card or cd soruce) then you put it at 100%.

thanks for the replies..

isn't a line out supposed to be fully unamped?

the imp400 has a line out, but i can still adjust the volume by the controls, does it mean it's amped?

a line out is supposed to bypass any internal amp circuitry. sometimes it does, sometimes it dosnt. sort of depends on the player, and how honest the manufacturer was when they went to brag up alternate uses for a second headphone plug

it should be noted that SOME line outs maintain true line out status by digitally retouching the signal (digital volume control for example) and still bypass the internal amp circuitry.
