I have Maverick TubeMagic D1 and HD650 for home listening.
I'd like to upgrade my setup. At the moment I have $1000 for this upgrade.
 
Would you upgrade the DAC/AMP and stay with HD650
or
Upgrade the HD650 to HD800 (sell the HD650)?
 
I haven't tried HD800 with TubeMagic D1 so I am not sure how that would go.
 
Any advise and opinion?

To me improving on the HD650 is difficult as it is the sweet spot for bang for buck performance.  You may want to listen to something like the LCD-3, Fostex TH-600, or even AKG K712 Pro.  The HD650 is an awesome headphone and improving upon it can be quite difficult.
 
I think the HD800 is too bright with most neutral amps to listen to for long hours.  The AKG K712 Pro is more mellow and easier to listen to with most genres.
 
What makes you want to upgrade other than having $1000 to spend?
 
Another option would be to try the WA3 or WA6-SE from Woo as it can be quite fun and pleasing with the HD650.
