Hi all,

I've had my UE-11 Pro's for a couple of weeks now - and whilst they generally sound good, I suspect my source is letting me down. I find the staging of the UE-11 great, but just not sure the clarity and wow factor is as good as I should be getting.

I currently use:

An old Sony discman with line out jack --> Hornet Amp --> UE-11 Pro.

I also sometimes use a standard Ipod Classic --> Hornet Amp, but generally find the CD's through the old discman sound better.

What can I do to improve my source? What should I buy next? Don't have alot of spare funds at the moment after the UE-11 purchase! Portability isnt a huge factor, but don't have much space in this tiny house either.

Also, can anyone suggest what gain setting to use on the Hornet Amp with my UE-11? I started off with it on LOW, but I strongly feel things sound better using the MEDIUM setting. Not sure if I can pick a difference when using HIGH.

I'd be interested in some thoughts on this please.

Thanks all.

I think your first best option is to listen through a desktop amp (a local Head-Fi-er or a HiFi enthusiast with a headphone out on their amp?).

The Hornet is good as a portable amp and old Sony Discman's can have good line outs but before seeking alternate sources first hear the best setup you can with your UE11s so you truly know what they can deliver for you.

Then start figuring what you want to tweak at the front end of your own portable set up - from source to ICs to the amp.

Good luck finding the best synergy for yourself!

The UE-11 and Hornet have great synergy IMO but tastes vary so it may not be to your liking. You may want to try some different amps to see how that works. If you like the RSA house sound I think I saw a XP-7 in the FS area... grab that and throw some AD797's in it and that should sound pretty damn good.

Another option would be to go with a less portable amp but I'd try some different amps to toy with the synergy if I were you. The only other alternative which is pricey would be an iMod and Vcap. I hear this is amazing but I just can't afford to do it for myself right now.

Sorry, I have to do this:
You have two custom IEMs and a PS1 for crying out loud!

That's why I'm tapped out

I've also been spending more time and money on my HT rig which is equal if not more important to me than my headphone rig.

Hmmm...wonder if it can hold up against my stereo pair, if it is only the headphones of yours that win.

I had same feelings of missing something as you describe. Bought an iMod + vCap, and let me just say that sure cured that. Probably out of your price range, but the solution is there when you can afford it.
