Save $100 and get the K601s? I may do that myself.

After looking at these two graphs you would almost think the K601 sounds like a Senn HD650. I don't think they do though, right? (never heard the 650).

Still makes you think. I might buy the HD650 though. Sounds like a good can. I like all the talk about the top end being 'rolled off'. They both seemed to be equally 'flat'.

I thought the HD-580 was supposed to be bassier than the K601's?

The graphs simply don't work for whatever reason for K701 and probably K601. The K701 does not sound like its graph and HD600 has more midbass than it does. They do sort of sound like HD650... closer than any other headphone that isn't HD580/600 probably.

Please post impressions if you pull the trigger on the 601. Thanks

However, I've not read it all, so I am unsure if someone has used both models (there probably is though).

No, actually there isn't. That thread doesn't specifically compare the 601 to the 701 extensively.

I have the K 601 and K 701 en mi casa ahora (I also have the DT 880 v2003, HD 650 and K 1000) and I'll be posting my impressions when I return from LA (OPETH). During the recent meet I found the K 601 to sound very similar to the K 701. However, after extended listening the K 701 separates itself from the K 601 with added texture and greater resolution. Even my non-audio roommate was able to identify this (he was unaware regarding the model numbers or pricing so his opinions were completely unbiased - he actually thought the K 601 was the higher-end model due to its more "professional" appearance and he was surprised the "ipod" headphone was superior). The K 601 and K 701 are very similar but the K 701 is superior IMO given a reasonably-decent front-end and sufficient listening time. I may still keep the K 601 since the K 1000 is still my preferred headphone (finally found a synergous amp for it) but the K 701 really is more involving and allows me to delve deeper into my music. Basically the HD 650 is very musical and listenable; while the DT 880 is technically superior in more facets I find it less appealing. The K 601, however, is as technically capable as the DT 880 (if not more so) and is more pleasing to boot than even the HD 650 (IMO, of course). The K 701, however is more technically capable than all the 'phones at my disposal (except for the K 1000, but in some regards the K 701 is superior to even the mighty K1K) and also the most musically satisfying to me. The K 701 clearly is a positive step forward in Head-Fi-Dom.

They sound completely different. I don't know how to put the differences clearly in words (or technowords), but they definitely sound different. I personally prefer the HD-650 though.

Hi Leeav,

may be I'm wrongl, but I have read another your opinion about 701 and K1000 were you prefer the 701 to the k1000... (?)

Which amp are you using now with the K1000?

Best!

I still prefer how the K 701 always sounds more organic to me, never displaying the odd stridencies I noticed with female vocals on the K 1000 (RKV MkII, EAR V20, CARY, T-amp and NAD integrated). The new amp is simply the Kenwood VRS-7100, a completely digital receiver that has unbelievable synergy with the K 1000. The special facet of this amp compared to the digital T-amp (and other digital amps like it) is it receives an analog signal, converts to digital and then outputs analog. The VRS-7100 received a digital signal from my transports and outputs an analog signal to the speakers- there is no interim conversion and the sound is fantastically detailed and not strident or sibilant in any regard – it’s a very pure, clean sound that is still warmer than any solid-state amp I’ve heard with the K 1000. However, the K 701 still sounds more organic to me though it is not as revealing. I'm definitely keeping the K 1000 for its supreme resolution and unique presentation but I need to decide between the K 601 and K 701. The difference is the K 1000 sounds amazing with some music and great with others while the K 701 sounds great-to-amazing with ALL music.

Good. We are at the same point, I think.

I cannot find one only CD not sounding great with the 701, I have found some CDs that don't sound great with the K 1000 and with the R10, even if some CDs sound amazing with K1000 and other amazing with the R10.

I think that a complete cans, TOP class, MUST be great or amazing with all our collection of CDs. I do not need a supercans just for some recordings, probably something is uncorrect in this cans... (IMO).

Best!

Excellent thoughts/opinions. Definitely cleared up a lot of issues I had between the 601/701's. Looks the 701's are on quickly on their way to Head-Fi Hall of Fame (or are perhaps already there?)
