i've tried the ipods, the zune, and several irivers and i still think that sony sounds the best...

this isn't me trying to assert sony's superiority. i'm wondering if i'm missing something. I think the ipod really sounds like crap, the iriver sounds pretty good, but not enough bass to appease me and the zune...i don't really remember. my sister has one.

Now i do consider myself to be a pretty bass-centric guy...i play the bass. But i don't like to be overwhelmed by it.

is there something that i'm missing?

If you use decent material (lossless) and connect it from the lineout with a good quality ic to a a nice amplifier and good pair of IEM's an iPod doesn't sound like crap at all. Try the Crossroads MylarOne XB or the UE Super.fi EB if you're a basshead.

I see you still haven't got any Cowon Iaudio's.They have good eq's you can get good bass out of them.

The phones you use probably have more to do with the bass you will hear than the player in most cases... so what you doing in that department?

i was using ue super.fi 5 pro's...but lost them recently.
using the same headphones across several players led me to that result.

i liked the headphones...i don't know if i would have liked the super.fi EB's, but i haven't tried them so who knows.

and hooking up the ipod to an amp sounds a lot like stationary audio and not portable audio...

Yes - the Sony NW-S706 or NW-A808

I had both and now just have the 808, they both have really good user and editor reviews. I had the Zen Vision: M and the Zen Touch and neither of them came close to the Sony's for SQ (to my own ears). When I bought my first Sony dap, the NW-S706, I read as many reviews as I could about it, and also about previous Sony players because I wanted to know what they'd done before, and what real users thought.

Well, I couldn't find a single negative review about sound quality. Provided any volume limiters were removed (no limiter on 706 or 808), the sound was generally raved about in just about everything I read. So I just went for the dap that seemed to have the most consistent user praise for SQ. Really happy with it, can't say the same for the software but I put up with it for the SQ
