Here's my headphone history
Sony MDR D66
Sony MDR EX70
Sennheiser PX-100
Sennheiser HD497 for home use.
Shure E3C
The EX70 was easily the worse, even though sometimes I like their bass hump for some types of music. I like the overall sound of the PX-100 and HD497 but was looking for an improvement and isolation so I bought the Shure E3C in the hopes that would be my last purchase for a while.
Overall, the rolled off highs combined with the rolled off bass in my iPod, I'm not a happy camper. When I read the reviews for the E3C, I never expected the highs to be as much rolled off as they are.
I'm in Canada so sourcing headphones at a good price is a bit harder (for some reason Sennheisers, Grado are priced crazy high). I like accurate bass and lots of crisp details, so I want to make the next purchase to avoid the pitfalls of the E3C.
For portable headphones.
Would any of the Etymotics give me a sound comparable to what I get in my Sennheisers currently?
Also, for full size headphones, are there any Sennheisers above the HD497 which are more comfortable, have a similar sound signature, are not overly polite sounding? How's the HD580 compare to the HD497?
