OK, here's my deal: I have a pretty good stereo in the family room (Adcom 100 watt amp and tuner, Rotel CD changer, Nak BX300 cassette deck, Mission 737 speakers). I could use new speakers, but I don't really listen to music there that much. More often than not, I listen to my iRiver imp350 in bed while either reading or falling asleep. I listen to a LOT of Grateful Dead live shows, as well as Bob Marley, Allman's, Dave Matthews (a little), a bit of jazz, etc.

I'd like to upgrade the headphones that came with the iRiver CD, and have read great things about Grado SR60/80 and Ety ER4p/6. I demo'd Grado SR60's as well as the ones that are around $150 (I forget the model #). I didn't find the SR60s to be too comfortable, as I felt a bit like my head was in a vice. The other Grados needed a heavy adapter to firt in the 1/8" jack slot in the CD player, and logistically, that blew it for me.

So then I traipse up to Etymotic's headquarters here in the western suburbs of Chicago, since they're pretty hard to find at audio stores. I ended up demo'ing them in their little cafeteria! They sounded really nice, but I'm not sure that the complete isolation would be good for marital relationship/hearing the phone, etc.

BTW, I also listened to the Shure E1s(?), the $150 pair and didn't care so much for them -- very little bass response for my taste. The E5s (?) -- the $500 ones, of course, I liked. Also demo'd them at Ravinia this summer, where they were offering a 25% discount if purchased by today. However, $375 is too much for me, and these headphones would probably just make me realize that my CDRs of 30 year old Dead shows, aren't really PERFECT...

So, that's my story. If you've read all this (congratulations!) and have any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thanks.

You may want to reconsider the SR60 and then just purchase the modified Sennheiser foam pads from Head-Fi member vwap. He has an ad in the Mall-Fi forum with contact information. It's very easy to replace the pads on any Grado headphones that are currently in production.

a heavy adapter? i bought an adapter for the grado sr125's im getting to use with my imp400 and its not heavy or anything. its certainly not something that would make me cross a particular pair of headphones off my list. You could always try bending the headband for the grado's to make them fit more comfortably.

how'd you like the sound of the $150 grado's (125's i assume) because you could get the alessandro ms1's which you can get a mini plug version which are supposed to be very similar sounding and they cost $100.

http://www.alessandro-products.com/headphones.html and get the version "w/ mini-plug adapter" which is stupidly worded IMHO cause those ones actually come with a mini plug then have an adapter to plug them into full size headphone jacks.

I hardly listened to the Grado 125's because I found that between the remote for the iRiver and the adapter for the headphones, it was too cumbersome. So I really just focused on the SR60s. I'll have to check out the Alesandros (new to me!). Thanks for the idea.

I checked out the Alessandro.com web page. They are currently offering 25% off plus free shipping, in case you didn't know. I'm going to try and find them locally to demo them.

If you're really going to use the cans while in bed, and you have a spouse trying to read or sleep next to you, I'd steer clear of the grados.

While I love the grado sound, I had to return mine for all of my wife's complaining over all of the noise that they leak. The possibility exists that you might have the same problem.

I traded in my SR60s for the HD280PRO, and have been pleased. They don't sound like Grados, but they do sound good, and they sound better the more I listen to them.

I've been listening to various rock albums using D66SL and I'm very impressed. Right now, I don't miss my SR225's...

...it's worrying me. But I don't care... I can't care!

Buy them
