I would appreciate some suggestions on a quality PS that won't break the bank. Thanks and Happy New Year.

In a post elsewhere on this Forum, Jan Meier (porta corda maker) says:

"Just one remark that I forgot to add to the user manual:

For optimal sound quality the external regulated power supply should be a linear one. Do NOT use a switched power supply.

Switched power supplies produce quite a lot of high frequency noise. The Porta Corda does have LC-filtering of the power line but this will not remove it all.

Cheers,

Jan"

I'll take his word for it, and use a regulated linear power supply.
I plan to use an Elpac WM080 -1950-760. They go for around $35-40.
24 volts, linear regulated. There are better, and worse, supplies out there, but this one seems to be (or at least used to be) considered a fair bang for the buck.

When looking for a power supply, look for the words "high efficiency" and "110-220v input" - Avoid these. These are dead givaways the supply is of the switching variety.

Does that mean that, it would hurt the amp being switching mode or will the sound "just" not be as good as it could be??

On the PCMKII Group Buy thread, I posted a few things about not using switching power supplies, and what to look for in a decent linear supply.. I got lambasted by those who want to take the easy way out. One guy even said he uses his cell phone charger and thinks everyone else should too.
It so nice to find this thread and realize that I am not the only fool who thinks a decent PSU makes sense!

Parts Express? I regularly order from them and I'm very familiar with their catalog, and I can't find any 24V power supplies from Elpac or anyone else that they sell. Do you have a page number in their catalog or part number for a 24V Elpac power supply?

Oops. I got mine a couple of years ago, and when I went back tonight PartsExpress was not showing the same stuff. Try Mouser.com; they have 24VDC 18 watt and 30 watt Elpacs that should do the job. I know I would go with 30 watt.

Will that connector work with the PC II ? Or will some modifying have to be done to reconnect the 'connector' that comes with the PC II?

Jan probably used an available connector jack, but I would not be surprised (or dismayed) to be discussing the situation with Mr. Soldering Iron and Ms. Shrink Tubing.

Thanks for the posts. I will wait to see what connector comes with the MkII first before buying.

If I remember correctly and Jan hasn't changed something, you'll find the power connector on the board and you will have to drill the case to connect to it.

The case is already drilled, the connector is very small (1.3mm I think) but as it's
a tight fit due to the angles involved a small tip is included which is the correct size tip and fairly easy to solder.

I aim to use an existing psu and a converting patch cable with a 2.5mm socket to the tip supplied.
