PC : IBM T40
OS : Windows XP
format MP3 and CD audio (at the very least).

I dont like the windows media player or Real. They both have too much "crap"... stuff going on in the background.

I just want a player that simply plays music AND uses minimal system resources. Must boot up / close quickly, and run smooth without bogging my PC down.

Does such a thing exist? Must be freeware, unlimited use.

thanks!!

Foobar all the way - Don't try to impliment AISO though - It's a whole world of headaches! Kernel streaming is just as good (IMO)

Foobar2000, definately. ASIO isn't really that hard to get to work (at least with the cards I've used it with). Just make sure you have a guide to go by if there is one, or play around until it kicks in.

I've had no issues with newer machines. However, on my gf's old celeron 566, trying to use resampling for ASIO on my audigy 2 (not my main card), it crashes often. Could be because our apartment is ~85F, but not sure. A beneficial (imo) side effect of ASIO is that messengers and other programs don't make noise to disrupt your music while there's an ASIO stream playing.

Foobar has so many options if you want to use them, but beyond that it's very efficient with resources and just sits in the background playing - like a good player should.

For video, if you wanted to know, I like VLC which you can find at VideoLAN.org

Foobar 2K with ASIO, which I feel sounds better than ASIO4All or Kernel Streaming. Also try Secret Rabbit Code resampler in ASIO at 176.4 kHz for some serious Kung-Foobar Kicks..

Lol no Itunes lovers here, I use it mainly because I own an Ipod, but the itunes radio is very cool, and organizes your music well.

Cheers

WinAMP all the way! The classics never die, been using it for almost a decade now, with the right plugins it sounds great and the free version is all you need.

Foobar2000. Comes with everything you need, don't need to download a dozen plugins.

Foobar is the only one I can think of that perfectly fits your needs.

I'll second that - after tearing my hair out over several nights trying to get ASIO to work. Foobar with Kernel Streaming does the job.

You only need _1_ plugin for ASIO on Winamp, and then maybe a decoder but the default works fine.

However Foobar is the single fugliest program I have ever used with its default setup, you have to spend forever tweaking it to get it to resemble a half-way decent program. Winamp has a perfect GUI with its default setup.
