After listening to the Ultrasone 8 for a bit (in the store) they are starting to grow on me but I'm still not at the point where I want to spend that much on the Edition 8. What is the next step down from there in the Ultrasone family? The one thing I really sorta of liked was that while the bass/lows was strong, wasn't muddle and it was very clear.

How much are you talking? You can pick up the Signature Pro for $850 and many strongly prefer it to the Edition 8 anyway. I did and sold my Edition 8.

The signature pros are showing up as $1200 on amazon. They're more expensive than the edition 8. Edition 8 are on sale for $1099 brand new. A used pair may be a risk if I don't like them I can't return them.

I'll take a look at the uE600/900

While the bass was strong on the edition 8 they weren't overpowering. I tried the pro 900 and found the bass was to much for my liking. I

How much of a step down are we talking? There's not a lot of good closed headphones in the $400-$900 range (there's not a lot of closed headphones in that range in general (I can name about six, and if you remove "weird" stuff (like the Koss Striva) that number gets smaller)).

Look at the Kenwood KH-K1000 as a very solid performing closed-back headphone. Somewhat mid-forward, competent bass response, smoothed treble. Very good all-around headphone, bit over $400 with shipping from AudioCubes. If they don't have to be closed-back, try the PRO2900 or HFI2400 from Ultrasone.
