I am just wondering... Are there headphones that make everything dead silent. Like once you put them on even without music, you cannot hear anything? Or is that just impossible?

If so how much would something like that cost?

If not what is the next best thing to that. What would cancel the most noise out without music.

The ety's isolation isn't enough? Are you sure you're getting a seal?

Correct, there is none better. None that I know of.

Perhaps earplugs with a set of flight-deck earmuffs?...

Well would this be a good seal?

Having them in and sometimes being barely able to hear the keyboard when I am typing?

A good seal is when your pushing them in and its no bass and then all the sudden you have good sound right?

as far as i know, the only way to improve on the ER-4x isolation is to get custom earmoulds for them. However, this *is* expensive and some people are not satisfied with the seal they get from the custom moulds. There are a few threads around about this or do a search for 'ety custom'

Maybe some kind of electronic noise cancellation phones would be better, but they are usually extremely expensive.

You might be able to get a few dB better isolation from custom ear pieces, but it won't be much more noise reduction. The noise canceling phones out there actually are not as good as the Etys, they'll get there eventually in terms of the attenuation, but probably not while delivering the same quality of sound. With the Ety's it's about as good as it's going to get!
