For some reason when fellow students here in college sample my SR-80s they say they sound almost as good as those "Bose headphones but not the one with noise cancelling". I dont understand the hype about it, am I missing something here? A friend of mine had those for a while before he got SR-125s and from what I remember they sounded worse than Sony EX71SLs. Is the sound of the Triports of reference quality?

Thats pretty typical really, most people have been completely brainwashed by the Bose marketing machine. If people would spend 5 minutes researching Bose online they would quickly learn that it is overpriced crap.

to my ears, the bose sound very weak and muffled, even through my freind's hi-fi system. even the sr-60s, which i had a chance to try over the weekend, sound much more lively. not only this, but the bose cans are very poorly constructed and break quite easily, even compares to the SR-60s, which aren't exactly the best constructed phones around. the bose cans are just overpriced audiophile imposters.

Confused...how can some of you say it's marketing and brainwashing when the original poster said that the people had heard both the SR80 and the Bose?

I know what the common opinion is toward Bose here, and I can understand dismissing opinions based on advertising and word of mouth regarding Bose, but not first hand experience.

I'm currently on a crusade to steer a couple friends towards good headphones, and I've had to shoot down Bose headphones quite a few times now. They've gained quite a reputation based purely on price and popularity. However, I've gotten 2 people to like my SR-60's and MDR-V6's, so there is hope.

I guess a preference in sound signature. Same reason people prefer Grado's over Senn's, or vice versa. I'm sure there's someone out there that would choose Bose over an equally priced pair of headphones that Head-Fiers would consider superior.

The thing that most Head-Fiers (and audiophile types in general, as well) don't seem to understand is that the scientists at Bose get better sound through research.

I mean, honestly, how much research do you think Sennheiser, Grado, Beyerdynamic and AKG really do?

Well lets say they all have equal funds, which is obviously not true, at least the smaller companies(that we all purchase) put their money towards their products are opposed to 'more sales through advertising'.

I know this is a headphone forum, but I remember reading a story about someone going into the bose store and listening to their acousitmass 'theater' set, and they were demoing lion king. James Earl Jones' joice was so deep that the cubes couldnt handle it since that lack responce in the vocal range, so half of his voice came from the 'bass modeule'. AHAHAHA
