i also highly recommend nirvana unplugged. as crazy as it sounds try NIN pretty hate machine. making distortion sound real is kind of tricky.

I have heard that elsewhere. I bet that's what I am missing with my "starter kit" (iPod - ALO dock connector - PA2V2 - SR60s). Maybe when I upgrade, I will hear what you're saying. That's one of the problems with this hobby - as you move up the equipment ladder, you hear some "faults" in your favorite music. Oh well, a junkie can't complain.

Good Gravy - you are in for a surprise when you get the ALO dock. To be honest though, I can't believe you haven't already noticed. At War with the Mystics is the hottest album I have ever heard. Crunchy is the adjective. Clipping is so prominent it is almost an instrument in and of itself.

Oh, so many that it's impossible to begin listing them! Off the top of my head, I think that virtually anything on ECM is fantastic ... some of their Arvo Part recordings are staggering. I also generally like the production on David Sylvian albums (check out the recent album by his new band Nine Horses), although production is not of course exactly the same as SQ.

A lot of the older albums that have very good SQ haven't been remastered properly (yet) for the digital age, but a lot of the live stuff by The Who, The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers has been treated well and is worth checking out on sound grounds alone. I always think that really well-recorded live rock is better in pure SQ than studio stuff: it shouldn't be the case, logically, but that's how it turns out (to my ears).

i like the spare production on pavement's cds. no over-compression and instruments and vocals are cleanly and simply reproduced.

to a lesser extent cake has a similar minimalist style.

yes, i agree. and it surprised me. i'm not huge into nirvana, but this is very well recorded.

another one that surprised me is morphine - cure for pain. late 90's rock with a fat barry sax in it. the sax and vocals sound awesome on this album.

you said this about flaming lips, and i agree. i think their yoshimi/robots album sounds pretty mediocre as far as good recordings go.

Don't know if it's the best one, but it definately stand out in my mind, I would highly recommend it: The Philadelphia Orchestra, under Riccardo Muti, playing Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. Recording is from 1985, with the EMI Label. Amazing dynamic contrast, very accurate and precise in terms of instrument sounds. As the overal sound of the ensemble. Very realistic. Beautiful and powerful
