There has recently been a sudden surge in the number of HD555s and SR225s for sale. What in the world is happenning? Most of them have hardly been used at all?! To me this is a good sign because people are beginning to upgrade at a rediculous rate these days. Both headphones are sort-of midranged in their respective company line-ups and probably represent the sweet-spot of their respective niche. Why are people selling them? I don't understand...

Seems like an opportunity for me to pick up a pair of already worn in HD555's

I got them used from an F/S thread and sold the SR225 after about 2 days with them (no other cans used at that period). Nice, but I liked my DT990 a bit more, so sold them without any further thought....

That probably added to the surge of sales.

Just sold my hd555 because though i liked it at first there was just something lacking.I felt there actually was some kind of veil or at least lowering of impact that made the hd555 kind of boring. As a old timer i always used a loudness button on my receiver or car radio and the hd555 sounded like i had shut it off.Went with the dt990 and i love it so far.I realize its not neutral but it provides the bass, treble punch I was used to.

The modding will cost almost twice the price of used 225s though.

Damn I wanted to grab those 6 Moons review sample.

Well, they're both "great but..." headphones. The SR-225 is incredibly seductive and has the power to draw people into the Grado lineup, where they often seek out an even better model to see what they could possibly improve upon. The HD555, on the other hand, is an also-ran second-rate HD595 (a great headphone), and it even sounds awesome so once again leads people to wonder "what could they possibly have improved on in the HD595?" Then they find out, and poof, the HD555/SR-225 go up for sale.

Are the 595s really considered a great headphone? I guess they are in their own way. I love mine and are a good bang for the buck can IMO.

I don't know what the deal is, but I went to the RS-1 from the 225's and stoped listening to the 225 for a long time actually since I had the "better Grado" - well I decided to bring it out of the closet (the headphones that is). And I forgot how amazing these things sound, esp. on rock. I use flats with them since they are very aggressive on the top end. I think they are better than the RS-1's on rock. The RS-1's have them beat on refinement and some other areas. But I will never sell mine. These people upgrading should think twice. I will keep mine - especially since I could only get $100 or so with them. They are worth far more than that.

Yes, they are usually ranked as contenders along with the likes of K701, DT880, HD600/650, SR225/325i, SA5000, etc.

I finally unloaded my 225's.....they bothered me, both in comfort, and the eversharp highs started to give me listening fatigue. I like bright cans, but these crossed the line when it came to extended listening. I'm finding a lot more happiness with my 880's and 701's, both sound better than my 225's in every way.

I guess the Qualia 010, MDR-R10, HE90, K1000s, higher end ATs, etc are considered excellent cans then?
