What is gain on Go-Vibe petite+DAC for?

Go-Vibe Petite+DAC has two gains : 9.5db (default) and 6.0db . Could someone please explain what these gains are for? By the way , I have Ipod Classic and UE Super Fi 5 Pro.

Also, when you use Ipod( classic), do you set volume at Max ?
