Fostex T50RP if you want semi-open can.

Audio-Technica ATH-M40FS if you want a very analytical and closed can.

Shure SRH840 if you want a less analytical closed can.

Sony 7509HD if you want your ears to bleed.

I'm sure I would, soundstage-wise, but that's why I have my studio monitors. The 70x's are famed for the lack of bass, but I'll try and get my hands on a pair to test it out.

The 701/702s can lack bass when inadequately driven.  That's why they need a good amp...To sound their best.

The Fostex T50RP is a great suggestion, although you may need a seperate head-amp to get the best out of them.  The Fostex is by far the most neutral can of all those mentioned in this thread.

I've just bought one pair this morning and I'm loving 'em. Just waiting for my Indeed G2 amp to arrive and saving money for better amp.

Agree, the Fostex are very natural, but they are even harder to drive than the K-701/2.

The power requirements are similar for both, but yes, the Fostex will safely handle more power, so they have wider dynamic range capability.  I find that the Fostex, because of their better linearity, sound better with modest power than do the AKG's.  I own both.
