What if you could only have one headphone....or two. What would you choose?

Hifiman Sundara
I love my HE-500. So much that after I got them I hardly listen to my Sundara anymore. I am now contemplating loading off the Sunny to get something that would complement my HE-500. Thus I am curious to hear what you find is the obvious partner to the HE-500? I have a relatively wide taste of music and listen to almost any genre with the exception of hip-hop, modern r'n'b and classical music
Which do you really like the best ?

1. Home Denon Ah-d7200. Fantastic all rounder. Closed back that sounds like an open back with amazing bass.
2. Portable Etymotic ER-4XR, simply fantastic.

Lately in my case, I use these two 90% of the time.
My other headphones (Sennheiser HD 599, Denon AH-D900, Sony WH-1000xm3, Bose QuietComfort 3) and iems (Final E4000, Jabra Elite 65T, Sennheiser CX5.00, Sennheiser CX 300) get the remaining 10%.

Bringing this thread back from the dead…

If I had to pick one, right now I’d have to say my Etymotic ER4SR. If I could have two it would be the Etymotic ER4SR and my Focal Elear with Clear pads.

th900mk2, stock come with many problems but you can eq very easily, many mods to tune sound, etc

Other headphones don't come close to that crazy bass, even with eq

Let's say Susvara (if I had them!) and TH900mk2.

Hey you seem to eq as well. How would you compare the TH900 to the Denon D9200 eq'd to the same target? The earpads on the Denon look as small as TH610 pads.

Right now? Honestly the Sennheiser HD 560s. I don’t know that it’s the absolute best, even of what I own, but it is what I reach for when doing things anywhere other than my dedicated headphone station.

They’re super comfortable, I could wear them all day, and sound pretty good to boot.

Limiting this question to just my current collection, I would choose:

1) Focal Radiance. That great, full Focal sound AND it's a closed back.

2) At the other end of the spectrum, it would be my Grado GH2's.

If I only had these two I would be a happy man. And I would likely only need my Sony NW-ZX300 to drive them, with the Radiance on the balanced output.

In a few years that is probably my dream set-up when poor health, old age and poverty take me. :L3000:

tbh I didn't really like eq with d9200 specifically, sounded flat and kind of boring. Stock sound is best imo, plenty of character and energy yet balanced. Although, for people that thought d9200 was a little bright, eq can help

th900 with eq, still bright but manageable, mids are pushed forward a bit. I actually left bass with no change (I used oratory eq), for obvious reasons, sometimes I even eq it up a bit if needed. Though, lately I used attenuation rings + xbass (on some iFi products) to get the cups to vibrate on bass, gives me a headache after a while but certainly fun

I will say, with eq, th900 can't reach level of d9200 mids, but d9200 cant match th900 bass.
