The cord is so loud when it jiggles around while doing movements such as walking or general excersise.

It's called "microphonics", and that's why Etymotic includes a clip with their IEM's so you can clip the cord to your shirt, problem greatly mitigated!

If you don't have a clip, you can try running the cord over your ears, it helps some folks.

Hmmm...336 posts...guess you haven't read much. I expected a Newbie.

It's called microphonics. It can be cured (mostly) by tuckng the cord over the ear, and then putting the earphone in the ear. Works nicely for me with my Marshmallows, at least.

OP, which IEM's are you using? Also, I know that Etymotic includes a clip, but can you also use some sort of clip with other IEM's (the other brands usualy have thicker cords) to minimise the microphonics? Form where can i get a suitable clip which doesn't put pressure or clamp the cord itself?

Using Crossroads X3's (with clip), and Vibes (2nd gen), which I also use a clip with. The cilp reduces it somewhat but not all the way. I have to turn music up loud to compensate (but I don't go passed a certain level no matter what). So yah, not sure. I've tried my best to keep the cords stable but it's still very noticeable for me.

AND yes, I know.. they're not technically "IEM's", but if it's this bad with canalphones I imagine IEM be even worse.

Not really... Biside clip, many high end (price wise) IEM come with memory cord (which will hold a certain shape) and have to be wear in an over-the-ear style which eliminate almost all microphonics (i.e. Shure), other come with cable that exhibits little of such problem. The only problem is, we are not paying enough on mid~low class canal phones for them to throw in the extra

Also worth noting, almost all headphones (except those wireless 'phones) have certain degree of microphonics (as all cable conduct sound). The only difference is IEM sit inside our ear which make them more noticeable. Of course, For not-canal 'phone, the material used, cable placement, and the overall design of the 'phone help reducing microphonics. Unfortunately, the limited size of IEM means option is also limited when it comes to mirocphonics.

You mean working out and doing physical movements for fun? Whats that like? Only movement I do for fun that would be considered working out is uhh never mind.

Wraping the cord around your ear is how all Shure IEMs are shown on the box. Also try running the wire down your back and see if that helps.

Hmmm. I don't experience any (at least not much) microphonics with my IEM's.
Perhaps the Westone UM2 are better in this area than the Crossroads X3 and Vibes which the OP use?

I think I read somewhere that Westone cables are specialized in minimizing this.

For running!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys, I will check out IEM's that have memory cables and tuck behind ear. I'll try behind back too.

PS.. I don't really hate IEM, I just wanted good responses from outraged fellow IEM wearers

and i think i get it now.

That explains it.
For those "unlucky" owners of a phone with microphonic cable I guess a cable clip should help a lot.

Westone's braided cables (which are by Plastics One, I believe) are lighter, thinner, and less prone to microphonics. Add to that the over-the-ear design, and the fact that the length from earpieces to the Y-split (what is that area called?) is shorter than average, and you get a microphonics-minimized cable.
