What headphones work best with the WA2
Apr 22, 2012 at 7:57 PM Post #31 of 43
My Sennheiser's arrived and I'm listening them though he headphone out of my DAC. I couldn't be more pleased with the sound and can't wait for the WA2 to arrive and then I'll be even more pleased!

I'll copy/paste from another thread:

"
DX1000 sounds GREAT paired with WA2

(I'm selling my DX1000, sale is pending, since I rarely get a chance to listen to music at home, and when I do, I prefer T1. But for rock music and also a lot of reggae and soul music, I prefer DX1000. Just can't afford to have this kind of luxury lying around unused...)

WA2 controls DX1000 really well. And the soundstage is just amazing:)"

Another closed headphone that work very well with the WA2 is Beyerdynamic Manufaktur DT770 600ohm. I had a DT880 vintage 600 ohm as well, but I thought the DT770 was better with WA2. Though I must say Beyerdynamics new line is a step up in overall sound quality over the DT-series. I'm now using T1 as my favourite with WA2 along with Senn D650.

Anyone have WA2 and ER4S? If yes, try and plug them in. A very special combination. I love it.

Really old thread, though I’m curious about WA2 pairings on modern headphones?

HD800S to my ears is really nice on the WA2, better than my Utopia on this amp.

I’ve been told HE1000SE is also another fabulous match for the WA2.

After all these years, I'm still loving my WA2 with HD800's.

IMO, it's as good as it gets.

t1 /hd 800 + wa2. new and old versions still good, great synergy that is very hard to find at any price point. there are amps that are more resolving and better overall, but for pure enjoyment and the sweet silky smooth sound the wa2 adds to the music, its tough to beat.

next significant step up is in the 3K+ range, a fully upgraded wa2 gets very close to those and can be preferably in some cases.

only 2 sets i found better in every way where the hd 800 / apex teton combo, as well as HE-6 / WA5 / HPA5000 combo, with upgraded tubes both these combos cost well over $7k for amp and headphone alone, more than triple the price of this set. thinking about it, the teton or hpa5000 is the natural upgrade to wa2, as theyre both otl & ocl designs.

Still enjoying my wa2 and the tube rolling /path I’ve undertaken following yiur recommendations.

having said that...... from your first line the t1 gen 3 probably is not a good option having only 32 output impedance now.

and from my own experience the he1000se goes (surprisingly) well with the wa2 but only with certain tubes (perhaps leaner ones) like telefunkens and not warmer tones like holland tubes (particularly pinched waist)

good point on the T1.3, guess only up to 1.2. 1.3 is probably nice on WA6-SE but theres so many choices for that now, wish they kept it 600 ohms. the reviews seem
to indicate it is still better than the old t1 though.

wa2 can be tightened up with 5998 or 7236, reflector 6n23p / 7308 and yeah telefunkens...

i would not use any planar with the wa2, regardless of impedance, they have different power requirements and are not ideal for wa2, i never found them to be a good pairing, always underpowered

my hekse is VERY easy to drive.

very enjoyable even straight out of my ipad or iphone

i’m considering buying a susvara to match with my incoming niimbus us4 (will demo together before i buy) but the hekse will be very hard to let go because of being able to just sit on the couch or bed away from my desktop setup and enjoy it out of my iphone/ipad

i’ll see how tight the finances will be

My WA2 also likes the 'funkens. I'm running TS 5998's, TFK EZ80's and TFK ECC801S, (12AT7's) via adapters. It's the best tube pairing I've been able to find.

if you ever get a chance to grab the gec6as7g the amp goes up another level

the gec6as7g are essentially plug in and forget I have other options but the gec are in there 98% of the time.

however prices on
ebay have hone through the roof.

they used to be up to $600 usd per pair that i would be ok to pay for for a great pair but now they are about $1000 which is a joke relative to what they were two years ago (ie up to $600)

but bargains do pop up every now and them though they won’t be nos - I’m ok with that
