I'm a techy/producer/interviewer for a student radio station about to invest in a portable recorder for interviews and gigs and I am looking for a good sturdy pair of phones to go with it. The particular recorder is the Fostex FR-2 LE. It's phones output impedance is 32Os. It's also got a dual phono out. Apparently the headphone amp in it is Rubbish.

Features that I think are important to me are
-Solid construction
-Faithful as opposed to friendly reproduction of sound
-Accuracy in the mid range, bass detail is less important to some extent, and treble shouldn't be too harsh as to avoid headaches
-They'll have to be closed so I can be sure what I'm hearing is coming from the mics, though not in ears as I don't feel much like trading earwax with my comrades in airwaves
-If I like them enough I may use them in-studio, in fact that would be really useful, though I have a certain lack of a quality headphone amp despite a middling DAC in my Mbox 2, AND if they sounded good with music as well as all this that would be marvelous - In general I listen to Jazz Punk and Electronica

Other factors
-I'm quite happy to buy and carry a battery powered headphone amp, in fact I was looking to invest in one anyway, with reasonable life if such a device exists!
-I like mods, tinkering, second hand items and ebay, though it's been a while since I've looked at a circuit diagram
-A budget of ooh, say £140 or $280, which can be extended a bit
-I'd rather a set up that was really good at the faithful monitoring if it comes to that - as the old saying goes, students can't be choosers

Thanks for reading for all that!

Zak

P.S. some more of the details of the recorder can be found here if it's any use to you

ah yeah, the qp805hs. Certainly rugged, facelvega says they sound good.

The bigger question is where to buy them. In the US there is no distributor that carries them - at least not to the public. You're in the UK, where there might be a distributor.

I might recommend a Fostex T40 but i doubt that Fostex has any of the Mk1 version to sell you, and the Mk2 isn't as good.

Lets be serious though. How about a beyerdynamic dt250-80?

i was also about to recommend the beyerdynamic DT250-80, or the DT250-250 if you carry a portable amp. very good headphone for studio purposes

The dt250-80s are good and available then? Will they survive me spilling beer on them?

Well, they may survive a beer spill . . . .

About MBQuart - yeah, they have a US office. No, they won't sell us a QP805-HS. The guy in that video actually has a head-fi account. There's nothing he can do about it.

Right now the only MBQuart headphone available to consumers in the US is a customized version of the QP450, sold by Charter Oak.

The DT250 is studio gear. It's reaonably priced for what it is, fits the sonic signature you're looking for, it's comfortable, and very lightweight.

I'll probably go for the DT250 then, however my girlfriend speaks fluent German so I may be able to get her to order a pair from Germany for me as it's no so far away. Either way it'll beat these MFR-v300s, which look nice but sound like a beach bucket - very good for creating 'real life podcast mixes though'. Thanks for the help!
