Well, the last time I checked, the search function is still working *hint*.

I don't know, I been reading these forums for like 3 months now and I still don't know ****. I don't think this guy realises that he can get a good set of cans(that he would enjoy) for less than he is willing to spend. Speaking for myself, till I started reading Head-fi and bought my HD515's I had no idea how good inexpensive cans could sound. I think if I had bought anything better it would have been lost on me.

HD(580/600/515) -> Sennheiser
(SR)225 -> Grado
A900 (ATH-A900) -> Audio Technica

I tend to prefer a bass heavy sound...

DT770-80
DT880
DT250-80 sounds great unamped.

IMHO the 770 and 880 need a powerful amp or stereo receiver to push them.... the 880 is the most power-hungry of the bunch.

SR225, a little less bass heavy than those listed above, but a great overall tone IMHO.

K501, sweet mids but needs a beefy amp to bring out the bass.
HD580, sweet mids, with an overall well balanced spectrum.

For someone getting into high end headphone's I'd say the Sennheiser HD580/600 would be the best bet. It is the headphone to beat in this price range - some people prefer extra bass, some prefer punch / speed, but given no information and asked to pick for someone else, I'd pick Senns.

Oh I should add - this would not be the best bet if you plan to listen mostly to the headphone output of a portable player, in which case the HD 595 (used?) would be a better choice.
