Yes, I've caught the Head-Fi bug.

Now, I know there are holes in my headphone collection. Which headphones should I get to fill the void? I'm probably not going to get them anytime very soon, but I at least need to know, for when the time comes.

Beyerdynamic DT-880

. Why? Because it's an excellent reference can, as it deviates from neutrality only in a very narrow range of the spectrum. It's also slightly analytical (good for testing amps/sources), as well as very musical.

Time to upgrade your whole system! Actually you have a really decent source and amp already, so I would suggest getting a pair of high-end phones like the HD650, K701, DT880, SR325i, etc...

You need the following:

1x Balanced Sennheiser (plus balanced amp to run it)
1x Audio Technica woodie
1x High-end electrostatic (pref. Stax or Sennheiser)
1x Modded old-school phone (eg. AKG K340, Koss ESP-9, Grado HP-1000)
1x Fast and bright phone (eg. SA5000, Qualia 010, Grado RS-1)
1x Really goofy looking phones that nevertheless sound really good (eg. AKG K1000, Jecklin Floats, Ergo AMT)

A Big Comfy Open 'Phone looks to be missing here. Under, say, $200US, I'd look at HD580, K501, maybe HD555 (for acoustic music, I'd also throw in a HD590), maybe DT440, or why not an MS-1 or SR225? Look out for good stuff on the used market.

I like Carl's list, in a cost-is-no-object way. Generally speaking, there is no complete list, given the number of high end headphones, cables, amps and tweaks. Realistically, you need a pair of good, open Senns. Balanced 650s rock, but that works out to major money very quickly (mostly because of the amp). I echo the sentiments about the HD-590s. Even with the stock cable, I cannot believe the soundstage they provide. I heard them described as the "Sennheisers for people who don't like Sennheisers." They're also fairly cheap these days.

If you're looking for more cans on the cheap, add a pair of Koss Porta/SportaPros and try recabling them. It's a very good first-time DIY project, and one that won't send your wallet on a bender.

Have you thought about trying anything from Ultrasone?
