Hi - I'd like to get a hard drive based MP3 player that I can also connect my digital camera to, so that I can copy all the images off of my camera onto the MP3 player's hard drive. The only device that I know of that can do this is the new IRiver H340: http://www.iriveramerica.com/products/H340.aspx (and the 20GB version the H320). Are there any other units out there that have similar functionality? Or maybe is there an addon for other units that give them this functionality? Thanks!

Anways... the archos multimedia players can either turn into a camera or have a memory card reader depending on the way you want to go. The camera modules they have made so far have been ok, but you are probably better off using a separate camera with a memory card. The new av5xx series is supposed to have the ability to act as a USB master so that you could just hook the two up by USB, but that is unconfirmed. The av3xx series can read memory cards through an attached module and the gmini and av4xx models can read through a built in slot [CF I think, and then you can get adapters for other types].

What's your camera?

Otherwise it's memory card reader (like iPod) or USB device (like iRiver).

Canon S410. It uses compactflash. My preference is definitely for one that can act as a USB host, though I suppose one that can read memory cards is ok too. (I'm just worried that one that can read memory cards might be bigger, and also if I ever change memory formats I might have to get a new reader...)

edit: and by the way I should mention I'm looking for something as small as possible. That's why the IRiver is fairly appealing to me - though it is still a tad on the hefty side.

looks like the first acts as a usb host, the other actually is a memory card reader. Looks good if I ever get a ipod.

Wow that is pretty weak. I take it USB on the go is a name for the USB host functionality? Would it be possible to just install the European firmware? I remember doing that with some older IRiver products... (the IMP-250 to be exact...)

The new Chroma and/or Karma 2 was rumored to have an onboard card reader, but alas not for compact flash. It's too bad, and most professional cameras (which tend to have owners that take the most photos with the highest resolution, thus file size, who are most in need of it) can't use it. Good for pocket SD/MMC users though.

the archos gmini 400 has a cf slot, and its pretty much the exact same size as a 4g ipod.. and its made of aluminum, so it should be prett ysturdy (as long as rthe internals are well built)
