I was thinking of buying a new MP3/4 player and was wondering which has the best SQ and is lineout capable

I was looking at the Ipod and getting the dongle

I also heard the zen vision M and Zune have good quality but i dont want a brick like the zen vision

Problem is the ipod is too common so too many people have it making it easy to loose

So now im wondering are there any decent sized Mp3/4 players other than ipod that has a lineout dongle available and has good quality

I've asked a similar question to yours.

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=239637

You're not really going to get an answer or consensus.

It's either the iPod or the Zen Vision: M.

Haven't heard much about Cowon, though.

Of course, the DAP with the best line-out currently available is the iMod... So I'd recommend, as I have also been recommended, that you get the 4g iPod, so that "later down the road," you can get it iModd'ed.

The 4g's DAC is sonically superior.

How do you know that?

People on this forum have suggested that to be the case. Red wine audio also (apparently) mentioned that the DAC was superior, which was one of the reasons that they would not (until recently) iMod any newer iPod than a 4G.

To me, they sound pretty damn similar...

However, if the 5G's DAC sound different, I'd expect the difference would be rather subtle and not nearly as huge as stock iPod vs 4G iMod.

I probably wouldn't plan to get it imodded...

I would be more likely just to buy a really good thing from ALO or someone for lineout because i also want to be able to use it ampless if i want to

The thing is zen vision ms are such bricks and the ipod is so common... well isnt the zune a brick also... So im basically screwed between a common player or a brick

I know, but that does not necessarily make it true. There is an unfortunate tendency here at Head-Fi for people to comment on things that they have not heard. I am curious as to how vYu223 reached his conclusion that the 4G's DAC is superior.

I've actually heard both of them, but I haven't actually compared them side-by-side.

I have reason to believe that Vinnie is offering to iMod the 5g because the 4g iPod soon isn't going to be as easily obtainable. Since It's going to be harder (soon) to get the 4g, I imagine that it would be harder for Vinnie to make anymore sales.

In order to stay in business in order to keep the (or an) iMod available, he would have to find out a way to iMod the 5g (since 5g's are readily available, while 4g's are continuing to diminish).

I would imagine that Vinnie would do the same thing later down the road once the 5g's become harder to obtain, even if the "6g" iPod has an even worse dac.

EDIT: Note: "worse" does not mean bad.

EDIT 2: Hmmm, I take that back. It is odd that Vinnie stated this in his website:

Quote:

"The 4th Gen. iPod uses what we have found to be the best sounding DAC of all the iPods...the Wolfson WM8975. We do NOT offer the iMod for the new iPod Video units (5th gen.), or any of the other iPods (Mini, Nano, older units)."

And yet, check this out: http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/i...;topicseen#new

Nothing too odd, but just a bit odd...

I guess that maybe the 4g iPod's dac has been thought of to sound better because no one has yet (until now) heard/discovered the sound potential of the 5g iPod's dac.

One of the advantages of the new iMod Vinnie is offering for the 5G iPod is that you can still use it unamped in its original form...
