It's clearly a thumb's up, which I appreciate, but does it mean anything? I can't find anything that indicates how much "experience" (experience points?) I might have, nor can I figure out how to give someone else "experience"?  Moreover, if I reach a certain "experience" level, does something happen? More hit points? Do I eventually get included in some list of head-fi sages?

No clue, but I think you me reputation instead of experience.  I really think it's just a way for someone to appreciate your thought, comment, or advice that you post without having to write a whole post and quote you.
