This weekend, I decided to take apart the computer that my parents were using, but was replaced by my computer. Since I do not have a job yet(i'm about to graduate freshman year in HS), we have this very strange computer hierarchy. My brother bought a VAIO laptop last month, since he needed a computer for college(going to polytechnic). So, he gave me his 2.13 core 2 duo machine(which I installed Ubuntu Jaunty on), and my parents get my 2.8ghz P4 machine. The old 600mhz machine is now useless.

I took apart the floppy drive, the cd drive(Samsung SC-148, the ram(2x 256mb SDR 32zHS), the 20gb Maxtor HD, the heatsink/fan, the sound card, and the 56k modem. The case still has a 600mhz celeron, but I don't want to bother taking that out. What exactly can I do with these old parts? I know I can run linux on it, but I simply do not have the space for another computer. I could recycle the case to dell, and luckily, the case fits into the box the vaio came in.

This hierarchy also occurs with DAPs. Since I am in the process of buying a new DAP, i gave my brother my old ipod Nano 2gb(luckily, he doesn't care about SQ). So now, his old Creative Muvo V100 has been placed in my hands(has the WORST UI ever. One wonders why they don't rockbox it), and I have no use for it.

if you don't have a need for it, simply recycle it. Easy as can be.

I am very bad about collecting computers and telling myself that some day I'll have an application for them... so far I'm just aggregating parts, none of which complete a computer. I've decided to start getting rid of some!

I'd say burn it. Those things can give nice sparks,

Just kidding.

I'd say (if you had the space) use it as a media computer, put in some HDDs and store your videos on it. Or use it to watch pron on the internet

It's not useless. A Celeron will run Linux fine. I'd suggest installing Ubuntu and giving it to someone who could use it. See if there's a nearby school, retirement home or shelter that can use it. If you have a younger relative, he or she would appreciate it. You could also take it to a nearby church and ask if they would give it to someone who needs it, or maybe they could put it into their rummage sale.

Don't tear it apart and/or throw it away. Someone would like to have it.

The only problem with this is that the cd drive is broken and I can't install anything on it, let alone format my memory.

Streaming pron on a 600mhz Celeron would be like a Powerpoint presentation.

It would probably function well as a media server/network storage box at best. If you do try to play HD content on it, the computer will lag and won't be able to handle it. If you want to learn about servers and all that, this computer would be an ideal one to practice on and set one up with. Install Linux/Windows 2000 on it and you could start messing around with that.

If not, post it up on Craigslist for free. Someone probably wants it.

My thought exactly!
Lots of people out there who can not afford to buy one...
