When a driver gets blown, is the degradation in sound really obvious? Or can it be hard to detect a damaged driver?

It can vary from one pair of headphones to the next.
Most of the time you'll hear a small to BIG "buzz" (depending on how badly they are blown) that shows itself on a bass note.
