For binaural playback, you need a binaural recording that corresponds with your particular HRTF. One size of HRTF doesn't fit all. So making your own recordings to your own measurements is a good idea.
That's an ideal binaural (exactaural?) recordings, but generally binaural recordings are done with dummy heads and near coincidental microphone setups approximating human HRTF such as Jecklin Disk.

How well it works depends on how close your personal HRTF is to the standard dummy head. If it's off by a bit, the effect dissolves.

The reason binaural recording isn't used much is because of this inconsistency. It isn't possible to get a one size fits all solution. It's the same with the Smyth Realiser... How well it works depends on how accurate your personal HRTF calibration is.
