To me thats covered by source.

Why?

Bad files are bad, better sources don't inject quality.

I mean that "source" covers the source of the music, before amplification. Be it AM radio or CD, ipod full of mp3s or SACD through a nice DAC.

I lump it all in together but I don't think thats the accepted terminology. I don't know what is.

Thats just how I see it myself.

the 'source' covers where your signal is coming from. this encompasses what type of MP3 player your using, or whether you're using an MP3 player or a CD player, the quality of your source file, etc. The part of your system that counts as "source" is everything up to where the signal is finally created; be it a mixing board or just the line out jack on your PC.

It should probably be split into source hardware and source software.

What about vinyl or analog magnetic tape?

I agree with Steve. Source is source and all that it entails. What the source is all about is an entire discussion in itself!

I see what you mean, but I don't go with it.

To me, a system is split into several parts, obviously. Each part of a system, to me is in its most basic form[although an i5 with AAA is one thing!]. So, if your source is a shuffle, its without anything on it.
In this case the DAC & Amp are integral and so a part of the source.

Involving audio files into the equation is varying something elses quality. A FLAC and a 128kb/s mp3 on a HDD are generally good & bad with no help.

Just my opinion.

They are still hardware, containing software! All source to me! I don't know though.

Is there another word for the software bit, apart from "the music"?
