At home, I'm really enjoying the mix of having one closed can and one open can. There's just something about the deep bass in a good closed can.

Still, the difference in sound quality between my A900 and AD2000 is fairly extreme (IMO). It's difficult to use the A900 by comparison at all even though sometimes when I really want to hear the bass I grab them. Then I'm disappointed because the rest of the spectrum is so lacking compared to the AD2000.

It seems like beyond A900 though in *closed* there's little definitively better until you get to L3000 (which, uh, is out of the budget). So I'm looking for a strong closed (bass) can to complement my AD2000s. Is there really nothing to consider between $150 and $2000 in closed? Curious if there are any choices I'm overlooking.

And for the record, I had DT770 previously, and found it outclassed (IMO) by the A900.

Commando's Headphone Reviews website is a great resource.

In terms of cans that are currently commercially available on the list:
ATH-W5000, ATH-W1000, ATH-A900LTD
Also include the new Denon AH-D5000 and JVC DX-1000 to the list.
There are also Ultrasones, that some may recommend.
Perhaps a Darth Beyer DT770 could be a favorable option as well.

I would personally search for threads regarding the W5000, DX-1000, and Darth-Beyers or wait for people to start reviewing AH-D5000's, which are new.

ATH-A950 to come soon as well.

Vintage Audio-Technica woodies are out of production, but you can still find them used. The CD3000 is also out of production.

I like my bass, but the Beyer 770 were just too much for me, even with bass reduced! Think I had 770-250s with a PPA.

Some have commented that the W1000 sounds rather strange. I don't remember exactly, but I think there are some who prefer the A900LTD over the W1000. Try to do a search on the forums for related comments.

But yes, the W5000 and AD2000 (open) are the two top Audio-Technica headphones currently in production.

Yup, with my current set up I prefer my A900LTD over the W1000. It has been in mentioned another thread that the W1000 paired with the right amp (like the Yamamoto HA-02) sounds phenominal and brings them closer to the W5000. I find the W1000 to be rather thin and flat sounding on my current set up. On certain genere of music that I listen to, the W1000 to my ears sounded a bit bright. The A900LTD on the other hand to me sounded warmer and offered a fuller sound than the W1000. They also gave a sense of depth in instruements and has a deeper bass extension. Mids in the A900LTDs to me sounded fuller than the W1000.

The A900LTD has been discontinued since it was a limited edition can from AT, and now AT has just introduced another limited edition set of cans to supercede them which is the A950LTD. The W5000 definitely deserves some consideration as they have been getting very good reviews and some even prefer them over the L3000.

W5000 should fit the bill very well in terms of performance/price and you will be happy with its bass.

I've read that as well. But I also recall seeing a lot of praise for the W1000s. It seems that most of backlash came about once the W5000s were released. Maybe people never noticed the W1000s perceived deficiencies until they had a better ATH to compare it with or maybe it just became the de facto second rate model. i don't know. I've never heard either.

That's some statement. I just heard the L3000 last weekend and it is clearly one of the best dynamic headphones I've ever listened to. The W5000 is not cheap though. I'll have to wait until I hear them. but they are on the radar.
