John Coltrane - Blue Train. Great album, but that's not what is worthy of remark about this disc. 
 
There is a partwork magazine publisher in the UK (and possibly elsewhere) called DeAgostini, who normally bring out series like "Build a scale model of the Millennium Falcon in 24 issues, each containing a handful of parts" or "cheap reproductions of miltary watches".
 
But their new venture is more interesting for music lovers. Jazz classics on 180g vinyl, available in your supermarkets, newsagents and other outlets! Issue 1 was 'Kind of Blue' at £5 . Issue 2, which I bought at the same time as I got my groceries today, was the 2008 Blue Note issue of 'Blue Train' for £9.99. A nice quiet pressing, too, with an extra leaflet of liner notes.
 
Issue 3 will be Billie Holiday, then Charlie Parker, then Dave Brubeck, then who knows? After the first two discounted issues, the price rises to (I think) about £15, which is still competitive in the 180g vinyl market. I definitely want the Brubeck 'Take Five'.
 
If you take out a subscription, they offer extra goodies too, plus a discount on a Pro-Ject USB turntable.

Is this the moment when vinyl truly returned (sort of) to the mainstream in the UK? I can buy timeless jazz classics on decent quality LP in the cruddy corner shop up the road!
