Last week during my trip to Chicago I had Malort liquor (70 proof).

It’s very rare to find but it’s actually made in Chicago and it’s a Chicago thing if you visit.

I had no idea about it until a local bought me a shot. Really liked it. It’s not for everyone since it has divided opinions. But I liked it very much.

The bartender was kind enough to let me photograph it as he held the cool bottle

I order green beans from Burman Coffee, cook them on my modified popcorn popper, and then brew in my 20 year old Technivorm Moccamaster or Chemex.

Today's brew: Ethiopian Yurgacheffe Washed Idido Ajere

Old Forester 1920 bourbon (it’s not from 1920. That’s the name)

This is a very good and shockingly smooth whiskey at 115 proof.

A couple things though: It is expensive and I paid $62 for it not including tax. But in my opinion it’s worth it because it is unique and the flavor profile is not like other bourbons. It’s smooth and refined tasting. I can easily drink it straight with no alcohol burn. But I guess that’s why it’s expensive.

Another thing is that since it is at 115 proof, you gotta be careful. It can be easy to get dangerously intoxicated so drink maybe one serving or 2.

Another thing, this also makes very good cocktails. There are whiskey aficionados who feel that expensive whiskey should never be in cocktails but I disagree. I like expensive whiskey both straight and in cocktails. Unless if maybe it’s some extremely rare bottle
