whats your budget? preference of closed solutions seems to vary wildly...how do you feel about earphones? exactly how much isolation are you looking for?

I already own a pair of ER6, but can't wear then all day (at work) as they are not that confortable and I have to take them off frequently to do stuff or talk to people.

I don't need massive isolation as my office isn't very noisy, I need sealed headphones more not to bother other people arround me.

I don't really have a budget as long they are worth the money.

I listen to acoustic, rock and hard rock (Ben harper, fun loving criminals, dire straits, metallica, disorder etc etc).

Cheers for the help.

AKG K271's are very nice in the $170 price point, below that I like the Sennheiser HD280's in the $80 category.

Already own a pair of beyers DT250 (80ohm).
I had a pair of crappy old Sony's to use at home w/ the computer w/ a separate crappy mic (for gaming, chatting, the odd mp3 etc). These blew so I'm thinking of geting the beyer mic to use with DT250's w/ the computer, and get a good set of sealed headphones for listenning to music during the day at work.

Cheers

If the budget level of the CD3K is overkill, then my recommendations as a London resident would be:

+AKG K271S, Available from Turnkey in Charing X Road, £90
+Sony MDR-CD1700, Available from ASK in Tottenham Court Road, £80

Also try unamped:
+Audio-Technica ATH-A900
Available from Audiocubes, www.audiocubes.com

Oddball but recommended suggestion:
+Sennheiser PXC250
Available from ASK again for £70ish

Cheers for your reply,
I should mention that I already have a pair of beyer Dt250(80ohm), so I'm after something that would be an upgrade from these (even if i'm not replacinng them, just need another headphone set) and would trully benefit from using the amp.

I like the look of the AKG, would they be a set up from the DT250 or a more sideways one?
Couldn't find the Sony MDR-CD1700 from ask's website (is it http://www.askdirect.co.uk/ ?)

Where can I check Audio-Technica prices in the uk?

cheers

The A900 is not imported into the UK. You will need to buy from Audiocubes.

The CD1700 is only sold at the Tottenham Court Road shop, it is not sold online. It should be possible to order them.

All of the headphones listed in my opinion are upgrades from the DT250-80, especially the AKG as a cost/performance benefit. I have to say I didn't like them (the 250) that much.

Every time this question comes up I always vote for the beyer dt250/80's. Unfortunately no one else ever mentions them as one of the best sealed headphones. I may not have the so called "golden ear" but I think the dt 250's sound great. Give them a try if you are looking for a good sealed phone. I tried them against the sennhieser hd280's and prefer the beyers.

One last thing: Always remember that like anything in audio it all comes down to taste. Some like a certain sound some don't. Try as many different phones as you can in order to discover your likes and dislikes. Have fun listening and enjoy the music.

The HD280 are the only headphones out of those mentioned which could in any way be considered inferior to the DT250 in my opinion. But then given the price differential this may not be a huge surprise.
