What are signs of player's hard drive failing?

My iMod seems to be acting up, such as locking on some songs and such. I'm not sure if it is a hard drive about to crash, or the Rockbox firmware.

Does anyone know what are the signs of you player's HD dying?

can you hear any noise out of the hdd? usually when i have a friend who's ipod hdd fails, you can hear the hdd repeatedly trying to read, it starts to spin, then stop quickly, then starts to spin, over and over, and eventually u get some sort of error msg

Yeah, last time my HD30GB9 failed, it made repeated spinning noises. Emphasize [repeatedly] made noises. HDD can make some sounds even when they're working fine.

Clicking or scratching noises. Or problems loading firmware or to play back files in general.
If it acts the same way after a format and reinstall, then it might be the disk.
