I just got my new D555 in the mail today - I'm going to radio shack now to find a AC adapter to work. I'll let you know in an hour

I use switching mode from Jaycar, costs about AU$40, 9V/1A
very compact, keeps voltage level very well and you can use it with different main 250V/50Hz - Europe, Australia; 110V/60Hz - US.
For portable use I have attachable battery compartment from Sony fits 8xAA.
Power consumption of D-555 is 3.5W so you need almost powerplant!

Thanks for the reply guys. I got the 9v 800 mA version and the sound is kind of grainy. Should I return it and get the 1500 mA version?

I dunno, I'm wondering if its my adapter...its skipping a TON. Like, so much that it sounds like static. It barely plays most CDs, I've found one in my collection it plays and still skips a tiny bit. And my CDs are very well taken care of! I'm gonna go to town on the guy who sold it to me from ebay - he said it worked perfectly fine.

I noticed that the lineout sounds better when I put the volume down to 0... dunno if that will help you any. My headphone out works fine, but lineout is a bit grainy, I've only been trying cdr's though, maybe real cds work better.

What I've heard from it sounds REAL nice, a big step above my Radioshack 3904 (also a nice sounding player - especially for the price!)...but it can't play a damn CD right so far. I'm really mad....
And I wanted to let everyone at the Headroom tour listen to it tonight! Oh well...I just hope I can get my money back.

Big,
If you want the original adaptor, the part number is AC-930A. Spec:
Input ac120v
60hz 10w

output dc9v
600 ma.
Good luck on finding this. This adaptor is also equip with the Sony D-9 discman. Considering you find this model cheaply in the internet, why don't spend like 20-25 dollars for a very good discman plus an ac adaptor. one stone --> two birds

Well I only wanted it for the lineout so I am either going to sell it or trade it for a different one since the person I bought it from has 3 hehe...

ian,
try running a lens cleaner through it. some of these older players just need a little TLC.

millerdog,
Yup, thats the first thing I did

Anyhow, with a bit of warm up and tweaking, it's working out a LOT better. Its finally playing through CDs entirely and getting better every time.
This puppy sounds REAL NICE - and I'm saying this after getting home from hearing the Orpheus at the Headroom tour! It truly is an amazing sounding little portable CD player. Back to tweaking! (cleaning it up too!)

A few more lens cleanings and its performing very nicely! Just so you other D-555 owners know, if all else fails, run the lens cleaner!

Ian,
Don't forget to write a review on the D-555. I'm eager to hear what others have to say about this player. Now it is your turn, after all the positive notes by me.
