Hello there!
I'm new to this forum (and pretty new to the headphone audiophile world too...). Well, I have this question but I don't know how to put it clearly so I'll start by making an analogy to the car industry. Say you want to buy a sportscar but don't know which. You'll do some research and see that EVERYONE recommends Ferraris or Porsches and hoards of people arguing whether Ferrari or Porche is the best. Yet if you do some carefull research you'll find out brands such as TVR or De Tomaso which can kick Ferarri and Porsche's asses but since they're not so mass- marketed very few reviewers even know they exist. If they did, then their opinions could be quite different on what the best sportscar was... Now I'm wondering if it's not similar for the headphone industry as well: I get the feeling that Grados and Senns are the Ferraris and Porches of headphones yet I wonder if there aren't other more exclusive brands out there making better stuff that most people simply are unaware of cause they never heard of them. Or in a more forward aproach, what do people think of such headphones as Yamaha RH 5 MA, Roland RH 50, Technics RP- FDA 100 (I heard it's Panasonic in the US), JVC HA- DX 3,....? These all (well, maybe except JVC) come from firms with a solid reputation in sound, so I don't see how they could so easily be overlooked when searching for the perfect headphone.

Hope someone reads through all my ramblings :-D

Hey it's not only grado or senns but also akg, koss, audio-technica, etys, stax, sony, denon, beyer, ixos, philips, ultrasone, that's more than a 2 horses race

Ok, you're quite true. But you can however find a lot of discussion about the jvc HAD-X3 or the Panasonic/Technics RP-FDA100 for example making a quick search. The problem is often the price of these other cans, making people a bit affraid to spend money in unknown things.

To be true, the 2 cans I cited above are quite overpriced according to most reviews.

I had these Yamaha's a while back. I thought they were good until i heard Grado's and all the headphones i own. They basically sound a bit better than the Sony MDR V150's, which sound like crap. The Yamaha's still sound muffled, screechy highs, flabby bass, no midrange to speak of in comparison to any of the headphones i own, the Koss portapros destroy them.

i heard a Yamaha... Rh 25??? 50?? something like that, but it sounded pretty decent at the time, for $25. i think the koss sound better though. maybe it was the RH5.

Bose is more like a caddilac... people who tend to not know much about audio think it is a good car, but it really sucks...

That's a generalization for the whole company...

Roland RH-50 are the best there is for <=$50. They're often called "neutral", but they really aren't- elevated midrange (monitor headphones). Compared to almost anything else in the class they're certainly neutral and very detailed. They're like a "toy K-240" for 33% of the money.
