Well I've finally hit 1000 posts so I thought I would show my "long journey" over the past four months since I've joined. Before I joined I was enjoying sound directly out of my computer's onboard sound with all of it's crackles and pops along with an HD515 and a pair of Sony buds. My father was an audiophile but I was too bothered with my life to take any notice of it, this forum has now opened my eyes not only to the world of high quality audio but has enabled me to discuss it with members from all over the planet. Thanks Jude! Here's the summary of my audio "life" so far, some headphones are left out as is some gear since I ran out of space, I'll post pics of some of the important headphones I've gone through in my journey a little later.

January 1, 2006: Crappy Sony all in one I got in the sixth grade serves as my "Home Rig" I think: Who cares I don't listen to CD's anyway.

January 5, 2006: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS Platinum Pro arrives, I think; Damn this sounds great, it was worth the $225 from Newegg.

February 5, 2006: My Sennheiser HD650s have already arrived and I got a "new" receiver, vintage Pioneer Quadraphonic QX-8000A, plug my Zen Vision into it, I think; Damn, this sounds even better. Here starts my love affair with vintage Audio.

February 13, 2006: Whoa, a lot happened in the past week, added a Sony CDP-C535 and a vintage NAD 3150 amplifier to the mix along with a couple of Cardas and Canare interconnects from Cantsleep, my replacement NW-MS70D arrives, and I added a Sony MDR-XD400, my first set of decent closed cans to the mix.

February 15, 2006: My Sennheiser MX550s arrived, I dredge the long lost ATH-CM7s out of the closet, bought them in Japan four months ago because I thought; Ooh they're shiny, no one else at school has them. Also rearranged my gear slightly.

February 22, 2006: Bought a Toshiba MEG-F40S mp3 player, what a dissapointment, old MS70D gets prepared to be sent off to Sony while my Sony NH600D arrives back from warranty repair.

March 4, 2006: Toshiba goes off for travel with my dad, mysteriously never returns
biggrin.gif
. Nakamichi OMS-5 gets added to my list of sources. Rearrange my gear again, I'm never satisfied.

March 7, 2006: Marantz EQ-20 arrives, Sony MDR-XD400 gets sent off to live with Mokpie. I rearrange my gear once again
rolleyes.gif
.

March 20, 2006: Harman Kardon T45 phonograph gets briefly introduced to the rig which also got a new rack today, this is of course made me rearrange my gear again
biggrin.gif
. Vintage Sony tape recorder gets added.

April 7, 2006: Marants 1060B amplifier, Marantz 2020 Tuner, Sony MDR-SA3000 w/Moon Audio Black Dragon Recable, and a Grado Extension cord have been added, first pair of HD650s are sold because of grill nicks, new one arrives with scuffs on grill
frown.gif
.

April 11, 2006: Second pair of "scuffed" HD650s sold, HF-1s arrived from Todd, rearrange my gear yet again. Lovin' those HF-1s
biggrin.gif
.

April 11, 2006: Four hours after I took the previous picture my Sony source has crapped out on me and goes out in the trash
mad.gif
, I scramble around trying to see which way would look best to replace the gaping whole staring at me
biggrin.gif
.

April 13, 2006: My current rig, the Black Dragon Sonys have been sold, the Sennheiser boxes I bought have arrived (To replace the one Sennheiser lost
mad.gif
). Got my HD414 pads the other day and I'm alreayd being nudged by my GF to sell them due to them looking, what was the word....HIDEOUS, that was the one
icon10.gif
, still waiting for my Beyer pads to arrive, I ordered 3 pairs of HD600 grills too last month so I have no idea what I'm going to do with them now that I don't have my HD650s. I like the look of the rig now though, it's clean and organized. I'm now on the edge on a pair of Headphile'd CD3000s......

April 25, 2006: Just got these in the mail today, he even had already burned them in, though I don't know for how long. The sound is pretty darn decent, transparent and full bodied, I doubt they'd be able to hold up to some high end Cardas or Kimber interconnects but these are definitely the best cables I've had under $50. The icing on the cake? They look good too!

Um...not to sound rude...but I can't believe you got rid of the 650 because of a couple of nicks, yet you still have the 515. That's...just wrong. I mean, if you're going to keep one Sennheiser, 650 would seem way preferable to 515.

The HD515s were my first set of decent quality cans so I guess they hold some sentimental value to me, oh and not to mention I'm really OCD so every little thing bothers me, I sold the ones with nicked grills for only $230 they actually only had two tiny nicks on one side and one on the other side, call me crazy if you will

Damn, and to think my friends call me crazy for the money I spend on my equipment. I can't imagine what they would tell you if they saw your stuff. I thought I was too crazy to spend over a thousand on audio equipment for a 16 year old, but I guess you beat me by a longshot.

I was too busy with school work and other extra curricular activity to spend time on hobbies when I was 16 (1986). Besides, my parents were very strict as far as where I could spend my money (most of it on savings).

Just be careful, you start out early spending that kind of money, you better make sure you come from a lot of money or can get a job that will support your lifestyle.

Damn!!! In 5 months!!!! You spend way too much money! But hey, better to spend on audio than on drugs! Man, I think I have spent close to that amount but it took me over a year.

EDIT: Nice to see someone young who appreciates vintage audio.

I see that now by April, you have realized that your rig has been covering up your calendar for the past 3 months
tongue.gif
. I have to say that if it was an adult making this post I would call you a crazy, haha. But realizing you are only 16 and have over 3 grand to dispose over a 3 month period on audio equipment that audiophiles 2 and 3 times your age would salivate over....all I have to say is that you should really appreciate the situation you are in and realize the real world worth of what you have. Amazing set up.

I am truly greatful to have a great paying pt job and supportive parents, they make me put a certain cut into my savings account but whatever else they let me do as I please, in their opinion it's a lot better than spending it on booze and blunts
biggrin.gif
, which is what some of my friends do, what a waste of cash.

Hey man, I totally dig it. I was too busy being out and about and spent over a grand on car audio, but a whole lot on CDs too. I'm glad I did because I could just as easily spend all of my money on, as you say, booze and blunts (not to mention blondes). Keep it up, this is a great hobby that can last a lifetime. Make sure you find something that gets you out of the house too though, or you'll end up a fat ugly guy like me. My senns make me beautiful though...

Very good advice and don't be too anxious to let everyone know how much money you have, ESPECIALLY your friends, could end up coming back to haunt you.

Well I have a soft spot for the Blondes, been nudging the gf for while
biggrin.gif
. My other hobbies are paddling for regatta/long distance/school/fun and surfing though so between those and audio I'll be poor for a long while
orphsmile.gif
. I better get a damn good job after I finish college.

lol, yea with all the component rearranging, you sure are OCD!
biggrin.gif

Great looking stuff though, vintage most certainly can be great. I'm powering some brand spankin' new B&W 703's with a 1970's GAS Ampzilla and using a (Soundcrafstmen EQ) GAS Thoebe pre-amp. There were a few caps going bad in the preamp but with a little work this system sounds excellent! It's funny how 1970's equipment can put modern day "technology" to shame, such as running it head to head again a Harmon Kardon receiver.

Keep up the collection, it's a great hobby and is obviously a better use for your funds than some of those other mentioned hobbies of your friends.
