My UM2s came in this morning without so much as a ring of the doorbell. I wouldn't have even noticed them if I hadn't almost tripped over the package that the delivery guy left. I hate it when a package worth several hundred dollars is just left lying around for anyone to pick up. But I digress...
I'll start by saying the packaging for these earphones is insane. It is a water tight, drop and smash resistant plastic case with a re-usable silica gel package that keeps the inside the proper humidity level. It is slightly smaller than a standard dvd case and is about 2 inches thick. The word overkill comes to mind, but they are marketed as an investment and people like to take good care of their investments.
The Comply ear pieces come in two sizes (lengths would be a better description as the circumference appears identical) and are the most comfortable noise insulator I have ever had in my ear. I haven't had the chance to try many other than regular hearing protection, but I have tried many types of hearing protection from silicon, flanged, regular foam, and soft foam. These are by far the most comfortable I have used. However, they don't have a very good stick factor and my ear canals are a little slippery, so I found that they slipped out of my ears somewhat when walking which caused the bass to become uneven. I am going to go to the audiologist and get my ears checked and cleaned and try out the longer tips.
The general fit is great. When properly inserted, they rest snugly in the outer ares of the canal (the part below the pinna - i forget the name). The braided cable wraps around the ear and is unobtrusive. Even with my glasses on, I was unaware of the cable most of the time. It only ever came to my attention if i turned my head or looked down sharply.
For the time being, I can't really comment on what everyone wants to know about, the sound. I can tell you they are extremely sensitive. With my px100s, I usually listen to my player at 50% volume, and with the UM2s, I was comfortable listening at ~12%, but because of a white noise issue I was listening at 25%. My flash player is known for having a white noise problem, and these phones turn that mild noise in the background to the level of an ocean wave crashing on the beach. This is not a fault of the UM2s, but my less than perfect source. I am returning my player as defective, and I am now in the market for a new player. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Once I get a better source, and give the UM2s a chance to burn in, I will try and give a more detailed review.
