There's so much activity in the world of tips for the UM2, and so many different results, that the subject deserves its own threat. At least for a while.

The latest mod? I cut 2mm off the back of a small Comply earpiece. It's hard to do, and it isn't pretty, but it cuts the bass attack by at least half. However, it's not fully listenable, IMO, due to strong sibilance. Do it only if you want to sacrifice an earpiece.

Then, I had an idea: why not push the foam up on a small Comply earpiece almost so the plastic comes through, and then compress the foam and put it in the ear? On my iPod (treble EQ), the result was quite pleasing: powerful (but not overwhelming) bass, nice sparkling trebles. It helps if you get a very fit by really pushing the tip deep into the ear.

I'm not super happy with my UM2's at this point, but I get the best sound out of them with the grey Ety ER-4 foam tips. I've tried both sizes of the Comply's and the Ety triflange modded to a biflange, but the foamies give me the best balance so far. I'm giving them 100 hours of "burn in" right now, hopefully they'll open up a bit afterwards, or I'll probably end up sending them back or selling them.

Shure sells soft, hollow flex sleeves that some people apparently like for comfort. Somehow, they had way too much treble for my tastes.

So, I took two of the flex sleeves and filled the lining (not the center) with Elmer's Gel Glue. After they dried (about ten hours), I tried them on. It actually works okay on an iPod with the Classical preset -- but there's an element of sibilance or "tinny-ness" to my ears.

The small Compry's still win top honors for my larger-than-average ear canals.

Just had the stem on my left ear piece crack on me today...I totally freaked...these 'plugs are about 8 months old, just slathered it with some super glue and now everything is cool.
