Whoo hoo.. it was a fun day, although I fell on my bum so many times.
Snowboarding is so much harder then skiing and I am still poop at it after spending a full day on the bunny hill (yes, little kids were better then us with their boards). But skiing was a breeze. I didn't even need to learn how, I just strapped them on and started carving like mad.
I guess skiing is more like rollerblading without the wheels.

That's because they don't have as far to fall, so they can be reckless.

I'm a snowboarder.. in fact, I was just snowboarding the other day in Las Vegas. A big portion of the park was still closed, but my wife and I got some good hours of sailing down the mountain. http://www.skilasvegas.com -- you wouldn't believe that just under an hour drive from the strip is a 10K mountain.
Got a little fed up with the newbies sitting in the middle of the hill, but other than that, the snow was pretty decent (considering they hadn't had any new snow fall in a few days).
Had one serious bail -- thank the good Lord for my helmet. Without that, the only music I'd be listening to is the i.v. machine beeping pumping me with liquid food. Got a bit tired at the end of the day, just decided to sail, full tilt, and next thing you know, I just take flight, and wham, my head hits the ground at a fantastic speed.
Gank thod I'm going dood. Without hat thelmet, who knows what hould cave happened!

Bastards! God I miss my '01 Salomon 450, best freeride board I ever tried, this thing glides like no other! Wish I had the 156cm one though, mine's too small (143).
I have to rent, but I'm still going to the mountains next month. Anyone in Washington state been to Mt. Baker? That's where I plan on going.

Yes yes, I hate the newbs who sit in the middle of the hill or who do not even attempt an effort at a turn. Go right ahead and scrape all that snow off the mountain and just slide down with your board horizontally. fools. that's not even fun!
sorry for the rant...
anyways, I just got back from a 2 week trip to snowbird, UT (near salt lake city). The base was a bit low at around 50-60", but we did get one nice dump a few days back and some of the lesser skiied steeps had some beautiful waist deep powder. they just built a new rail and jump park at snowbird, and I had some fun taking those 10-15 foot jumps for the first time. At first site, people taking those jumps seemed so unbelievable. Down they went, with good speed, and pop! Up they soared and floated in the air. Some of the freestyle skiers/boarders there were pretty amazing, pulling off 540s, 720s, and front/back/side flips. Pretty awe inspiring and humbling. I got some practice with my helicopters (360 jump on skis), but they didn't look anything like the ones others were pulling off. I might link some pics/vids, if anyone is interested. The rails and funboxes scared me and I did not attempt them.
As for people learning to board...
1. Take a professional lesson. I am at heart a skiier, but I also board about 20% out of every season. Even with skiing skills, boarding is difficult to just 'pick up', and a lesson by a professional definitely helps you to at least make a few turns down the hill.
2. In lieu of a lesson... don't lean back, keep that weight forward and down the mountain, and your turns WILL come about. that is the biggest problem... you fear turning your body and weight down the mountain, you lean back, lose all control, and inevitably eat it. The other thing is to be wary of catching an edge on the flats. Until you learn how and when to shift your weight, cruising around the flats and such can be very deadly if you catch an edge and eat it hard on a flat, packed surface at 20+ mph.
3. And a helmet is a wise investment. A few years back, I bonked my head on one of the aforementioned flat areas, and was a bit woozy the rest of the day. Needless to say, the memory of the fall did not help my confidence in boarding the steeps the rest of the day, and having mental confidence is one of the most important things in boarding/skiing.

I Twintip ski all the time, and i went today (we got 18inches of snow yesterday+last night) so i did alot of making fresh trackes in the woods, and to my surprise i went to my terrain park (they added 1 rail 3 years ago and havent done anything to it since) and there were 2 new rails one was a gap rail the other was a kinked flat rail. We get a picnic table, one 15 foot kinked fun box and one 10 foot flat funbox. i was so totally blown away, god i love skiing.

I only went once. I had no problems on the bunny hill but I was scared to death of the Six Shooter, a man made mountain that looks as tall as Mt. Everest at Snow Creek for Kansas Citians. I still went off the six shooter, but I wiped out and in result?-- My pants were ripped from crotch to knee. I went to the managers cabin, got my pants all taped up, and never went skiing again. Or ever again.

The first time I went snowboarding, I learned this the hard way!
Seriously that was the most important piece of information that my instructor gave me in my beginner's lesson. Not that I'm an expert now, I only go boarding about once a year, but I still don't fall much and I can turn pretty well.

Just got back from a week of skiing up in Sun Peaks, BC. Excellent snow, and 3 mountains of it. (they're going to add 9 lifts and 2 mountains in the next few years/decade... gonna be huge, as they say)
