Its the time of the year again to upgrade.

I'd like to know your guy's thoughts on these and any recommendations you might have before I order the parts off Newegg. This year, I want to take advantage of a dual core system. So heres the build:

AMD Opteron 165 "Denmark" (I'm pretty set on the Opteron series because of its overclocking ability)

DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D Motherboard

I haven't decided on a video card yet, but I want one in the $100-200 range. I don't really need the strongest video card ever for this pc because I already have a very good one on my laptop.

For the ram: I'll hold on to my Geil ValuRam DDR400 512x2 for now and see how well they can keep up with the overclocking.

I need some wisdom.

very good choice with the cpu and mobo, as a combo that will oc VERY nicely, especially if you have some nice ram. for a video card, atm the 7600gt seems to be the best in the price range.

I recomend getting 7600GT or X1800GTO for video card

I built a system with an Opty 165 and a DFI NF4 SLI-DR, and that thing was a SCREAMING overclocker. I got to 2.6Ghz easily, and could have gone higher with higher end cooling (was using Scythe Ninja w/low RPM fan). I've had two DFI boards now, and they are the best out there, in terms of tweakability and performance. They just require a bit of work to optimize, but it's worth it if you like that kind of thing.

With the cpus for their new socket coming out soon, I'd rather not buy an AMD now - there might be a nice price drop in a few weeks...

I have nearly the same system. I had to upgrade to the Opteron also to make these head-fi national meet videos. My Opteron doesn't seem to overclock as much as my venice though. I'm down from 2.75ghz to about 2.66ghz. Still testing.

Anyway you can't go wrong with this CPU. Most people can't make use of that speed anyway. I also likfe DFI mobos but more tweaking options can be confusing unless you know what to do.

If you dont' really play games, there's no sense in even getting a middle of the road card.

slightly OT: Today I got a nice big parcel, with a new mobo, new cpu and new graphics card... wait, there is something missing.... Yes, the CPU Cooler is missing, out of stock

Actually, as far as I know the 7600GS is better than the 6800GS stock, but the 6800GS overclocks better and can surpase it. I'm running a 6800GS I bought before the 7600 series came out, and I'm very satisfied, Half life 2 at 1600x1200 with everything maxed gets a very playable 40 fps.

I like nvidia cards over ati cards, nvidia has much more user customization abilities. And get an EVGA card, best warranty in the market. Covers overclocking damage and changing the heatsink doesn't void the warranty!

7600GT is much better than 7600GS. And as you said yourself, 7600GS is better than 6800GS which makes 7600GT much better than 6800GS....

Unless you have a good reason for dual core, a single core often overclocks much higher and will provide more speed for games and other day to day things. The vast majority of software isn't optimized for multithreading (multiple processors, i.e. dual core) so they only use one of the cores. Opty 146's have been known to get near 3GHz on AIR. Duals have a harder time doing that.

But if you do stick dual, the 165 has the best bang:buck ratio at the moment

I suggest a used 7800GT for the vid. Ever since the 7900 series came out the 7800's lost about $100 of value and are going used around $200. They're a big step up from the 7600 series and will straight dominate a 6X00 card, and with minimal tweaking they OC to 7800GTX levels. That puts you right around the performance of a 7900GT which goes for ~$350 online, ~$400 at stores.

I was thinking about upgrading my computer. Right now I have a socket A 2500+ with 1 gig of ram and 9700 pro. I debating whether to step step up to socket 939 now or wait for AM2 or conroe. I know there is going to very little performance difference between 939 and AM2, but the future upgradability of a AM2 is much more.

As far as the OP question, I think your building a solid system.
