I was using:

I just put my Etymotic ER-4S in, and I'll listen again.

Again, even with the Etymotic ER-4S, the duduk appears to resonate harder in the right ear at times, but I'm not hearing what you described: "...and there are two times whilst this instrument is being played where the sound in the right channel seems to disappear - but it doesn't, the SOUND goes, but I can FEEL the 'pressure' of the note in my ear..."

Oh

I'm just listening on my Senn HD-580/Marantz 63SE (WITHOUT X-Cans) - and, its still there (to me) - I must just be wording it incorrectly... You say resonances Jude... Even with the 580s it sounds almost like 'black-noise' - What ARE resonances? (oh boy I bet I sound dumb now) - Maybe this is a perfectly normal sound - but having not heard it before its like 'Whoooooooah'??

Thanks

The sounds must be subsonic to you. Have you ever tried playing test tones to see where you stop hearing sounds and starts feeling it instead? (but the two are not exclusive)

That could be it Joe - maybe my ears just can't hear whatever frequency it is - but, how would I feel, rather than hear the noise?

BUT - Track 1, there is a wind instrument... and there are two times whilst this instrument is being played where the sound in the right channel seems to disappear - but it doesn't, the SOUND goes, but I can FEEL the 'pressure' of the note in my ear... The nearest I can describe the 'sound' is as if for a few seconds it goes out of phase - but, there is nothing to cancel it out... very strange...

Pretty much like how you described it I suppose... dunno about that 'out of phase' part though

In terms of acoustics, resonance is when a tone intensifies and stretches out usually from its own echo (vibrations of near (or exact) the same frequency). Amplitude increases (oscillating effect)...

A little update for you...

D-E905 -> MX4/500s = Distortion
Marantz CD63se -> (Headphone out) Senn HD580s = Distortion
D-E905 -> JMT Altoids -> Sony V6 = no distortion...

why?

Yeah, at 10/10, any PCDP or any portable for that matter would start crapping out I can imagine.

I can't even begin to say how unhealthy those numbers are for the ear...

I recently got a pair of the mx400 as you headfiers seem to think there pretty good .Unless I got an old or defective pair I thought they were pure crap. I listen to classical and they sounded lifeless and dull although not strident like the ex70's.
I guess I'm spoiled by the ety sound ; and i know its not a fair comparison but nevertheless there a better buds out there for a few bucks more.

Duncan, what about

D-905->JMT altoids->MX4/500 and
D-905->Sony V6?

As you changed two parameters going from

D-905->MX4/500
to
D-905->JMT altoids->V6

You can't know whether it's the JMT or the V6 causing the change... bad experiment design
