So when I was in Nipponbashi the other day, I saw a few other interesting things - and I was wondering if you guys might know anything about them.

First, in several stores I noticed that Denon apparently makes headphones. I know that there are folks who have kind words for their turntables and home stereo equipment, but does anyone know anything about their headphones?

Other interesting/bizarre/or just otherwise unseen-by-me brands included qualios (sp?) earspeaker, Fostex, and Ultrasone.

Also, I caught sight of Pioneer Monitor 10Rs. I know nothing about them, but I fell in love with the way they look (especially the strap adjuster knobby and coiled cord. It is the look of science!). I might consider these or the Monitor 8s sometime as a portable, or alternative to my open air headphones. Well, those or a pair of canalphones. I think I want more stuff than I actually need

If anyone knows something about any of these brands or models, I'd love to hear it.

Denon AH-G500 I remember having very weak bass.
Ultrasone makes pretty nice headphones. Try a search on HFI-550 / 650

Qualias are sony's flagship model i think, and they look really nice, not just the headphones, but their plasma and digital camera as well. how much are they selling qualia for in japan? out of curiousity.

I didn't actually SEE a pair of qualias, so I have no idea what they cost. I did, however, pick up one sexy catalogue that was all about them.

And Zchan, you are right. There is a lot of stuff that I want, and for no good reason. Pioneer Monitor 10R because they look cool. Grado SR80 because everybody speaks nothing but gold about them. High end canal phones. Sony Eggos... I think it keeps going.

hmm, too bad about the denons.

I guess I was asking this because I still want some sort of alternative headphone for when I'm out (can barely stand the Sony 300 anymore.). All of these would be alternative-alternative, but all but the denons are way out of my price range at the moment.

Someone has suggested the KSC75s to me for a hold-me-over. Would love to hear suggestions. Especially if it is in the 'rare, weird toy' category...

Actually I have a set of Denon AH-G300. And I'd say they have plenty of bass. My experience with headphones is rather little, but I'd give them a rating of "good 'nuff"

I couldn't really discern a difference between the G300 and G500, at the time I bought them I wanted something other than my set of EX71s that I used both at home and out. I settled on the G300 after look at how Denon had quite a bit of other audio equipment out there. I figured, hey how bad could their headphones sound.

I'd say there rather warm. A bit of eq and the treble comes out. Other than that, there nothing amazing. Probably better options out there. Comfortwise that hard plastic band is...well... hard. After 30-45 minutes it starts to grate into your head. I put a bit of a cushon on it and its not so bad.

Overall, they sound ok. A good middle of the road. But like I said, probably something better sounding out there.

wowwow. Those are some nice pics of the 10R - thanks for posting them.

Thanks for the opinion on the Denons. Don't know if I'm crazy to get a pair or anything, though.

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but you guys in Japan don't happen to see any Bit Char-G's on sale around town, do you?

Just wondering,
Abe

not worth it to get teh s8, i rather get the 10r. it has better built and sound overall. the cord is very unideal for portable unless you find a way to tie it up. coil cords get caught to thigns easily, and when it happen you wont notice and the cord got stuck and you wakl abuot 7-8 ft away from where it was caught and then the headphone flew backward out of your head.
it has a decent sound stage and fun upper range, not to bad with classical. bass is okay. pretty decent closed phone for, but wouldnt pay more than $100 for it.

if you are asking for the price of the Qualia 010 headphone, they sell them for 250,000 yen (262,500 yen with tax). pretty comprable to the $2600 they charge in the US.

they have prices and other info of all the Qualia products on their website....

I guess I can get away with this because I am new here. Bit Char-G's? Is that something you can eat?

Thanks for the advice on the 10R. It seems like fun. That cord-jerking scenario is one I had not imagined, but it sounds like the funniest/worst way to break new headphones. I'll bet they could find a happy place in the office perhaps? I wonder if there is room enough in ones collection for these and grados...

And dang! The qualia, huh. I was counting the yennies very slowly, for comic effect. If I had to choose between a semesters rent and food, and those qualias -- it would be a tough choice but I think I would pick 'living for six more months' ^_^.

peace guys

LOL, that's the funniest reaction to that I've ever heard. You made my morning, bro!

No, you can't eat them, or at least I'd advise not to. They are a type of 1:64 scale R/C car that has upgradeable parts. If you search on Yahoo, you might find out about them. I have to import all the good stuff from Hong Kong shops, which get their stock from Tomy/Tomica in Japan. They sell them under the brand MicroSizers in the 'States, but the import ones have more variety compared to stateside ones(i.e. Super Bit Char-G's and Pullbacks). However, we modify the crap out of them over here. See this site.
That should explain everything.

Oh, hell yeah! I know what you're talking about now! Those are the fun. Have you played with the little tanks as well (they used to sell them at Fry's electronics in the states; never got one, though). Talking about tanks, have you ever seen the Tokyo Marui RC tank?

Oh yeah! the TM Tiger. Those things r cool. My friend has a couple. He also had this other one (not TM) that was an M1A1 Abrams that fired airsoft BB's @ 150fps. Then some dumbass stepped on it when he was playing football (wasn't looking where he was running).
