Although I was responsible for the overview design of a few major websites in the pre dot-bomb days, I have to admit I never actually learned how to program for the web. I'm trained in industrial design / systems analysis / business analysis among other things, but not as a coder as such.
Now that I've completely turned my back on corporates and am depending on the bunch of programmers I've assembled to handle the programmatic requirements for the clients, I've totally lost any grip I might have had on even HTML. The problem with great programmers though is that they're truly hopeless teachers (as well as unreliable, late risers and frankly a bit smelly until they finally get a dominating girlfriend). Despite my best efforts to spend some time with these guys, I've not learned very much about the ins and outs of Flash, XML, RSS, etc.
I'd like to do some web work for myself. My blog could do with breaking out of the Blogger template for a start. I am of course technologically orientated but I'm not exactly the most idle person on the planet. I have all the tools that the programmers use (Studio MX, etc), but even with basic prodding from the programmers it's been a case of, um... paddle, creek, without... you get the idea. I think I need something with much more instant gratification.
What learning book/method and software would you recommend for the time-pressed, only-geeky-to-a-certain-extent guy to get effective results quickly?
