I was reading a thread (is well down the list now) on the new Raptor and there was the comment describing it as something like... "pure sounding not syrupy and over-warm like some think tube amps should be!".

Now I'm sure the Raptor is an amazing amp but I remember my grandmothers old wooden tube radio... if I was looking for a "warm, distorted, rich, old fashioned" sounding amp that is newly manufactured - could anyone point me in the right direction?

I don't know about the distortion part, but I can tell you that, to my ears, the Earmax Pro is a very warm, rich sounding tube amp. I'm comparing this to the original MG Head DT, which, to my ears, is colder and thinner in comparison.
And I know well the sound you're talking about. I remember my brother, whom I shared a bedroom with back in the 50s, listening to Alan Freed or Jocko's Rocket Ship Show (early R & R) on a tubed Zenith AM radio. Listening in the darkness, the sound was so warm and mellow. The glow from the back of the unit served as a nice night-light as well.

Phew, thanks Joelongwood. I had the terrible feeling I'd offended the Audiophiles out there by asking for something other than "true" sound.

I'm very new to tubes and still have a lot to learn, but if I can find what I'm after (they're SO good looking too, I'd love to see them glowing in the dark of my lounge) I'll buy it.

There is no amp that I have had which is warmer sounding than the EMP. Detail is behind the leaders and bass can get a bit bloated. The EMP anniv correct a lot of these faults but it is expensive and may be more than what you wish to pay. Oh and they are "dinky". Should of never sold them.....

Thanks "Redwings" i'll check it out.
By the way, did you know you can give someone a "dinky"?

It's true an Australian from Queensland told me once.
It's when you let someone sit on your bicycle seat while you peddle.
We call it "doubling" or a "dub" down here, same thing.
I guess it's 'cause the person getting the lift looks "dinky" perched on the back, but I could be wrong... sorry rambling.
