Hi, for a top secret project my father and I want to try (yes, this time for real
tongue.gif
) we need a VERY strong AND powerful 4 inch woofer - something that can deal with lots of air resistance.

I have another dumb question - speaker driver sizes are given in diameter right?

Yes diameter. But be careful, some are the size of the
speaker cone, some are the basket size, and others
are the frame size.

decent 4 inch long throw drivers are hard to find.

Dynaudio has a 5" woofer; the cone is actually about 4.25", and it has a 3" voice coil and is capable of high output and high power handling. The driver is on the low side sensitivity wise though. This driver is used in a lot of upscale designs.

Not to hijack, but while we're on the topic, does anyone know of a good, high-efficiency fullrange driver smaller than 4"? Again, for a top-secret project I've been discussing w/ someone.

You want any of the Tang-Band 3-inch fullranges (www.tb-speaker.com). The W3-594S is the same driver used in nOrh 3.0 speakers.

Thanks Sovkiller!

I ruled out paper woofers because I thought they would not be strong enough, however.

I will give you guys one more hint - the woofer will have to deal with about 900% more wind resistance than an average woofer!

Those drivers though look really good.

The strongest woofers ever made, even for pro use were made out of paper cones, see the Eminence line of pro-woofers, up 1000 watts or more, of course they are not 4"
