Is the D10 my only option- I want optical input for other uses beyond my laptop but don't want to spend $275 for the D10. Think uDac with optical and that's want I want (under $150).
Any suggestions?

doesnt exist, and geeze you dont half want much do you for 150. 275 for what the D10 offers is actually very good value, trying to pay half that is really just gonna end in disappointment and a waste IMO. if you can DIY you might be able to build a mini^3/gamma1 combo, buy you would have to stretch a touch and be willing to use a barebones case like a tin or something

You're telling me you can't add an opt input to the uDac for another $50 (if they did custom)? That's kind of what I am looking for.

would be a stretch, the Udac is already very low cost for what it is and to add optical they would need to add a MUX and switching mechanism. also optical doesnt supply power, USB does, so you would need to add a battery. its doable, but no it doesnt exist currently. they couldnt just add optical, even if they could power the dac via USB while accepting optical input, the 5v from USB is already pretty stretched with what its doing already, add a MUX and optical receiver and I just dont think it would work without a battery $$. someone might do it, but the money has to come from somewhere so something will suffer
